The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its statewide “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” campaign by taking strict action against several well-known food establishments in Mumbai. As part of the latest crackdown, the licences of Noor Mohammadi Hotel, Shalimar Hospitality, and Rahmania Restaurant have been suspended after inspections allegedly revealed serious violations of food safety and hygiene norms.
The action is part of the FDA’s ongoing drive to ensure that restaurants, hotels, and food businesses maintain proper sanitation standards and provide safe food to customers.
Serious Hygiene Lapses Found During Inspection
According to officials, inspection teams discovered multiple hygiene-related issues at the establishments. The violations reportedly included grease-covered kitchen areas, conditions that could encourage pest infestation, poor overall cleanliness, improper food storage practices, and the absence of mandatory food safety and water quality records.
Authorities said these shortcomings pose potential health risks to customers and violate the standards prescribed under food safety regulations.
The FDA noted that maintaining hygienic kitchens, proper food handling practices, and accurate safety documentation is essential for protecting public health. Any negligence in these areas can increase the risk of food contamination and foodborne illnesses.
Part of the ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ Campaign
The latest action comes under the Maharashtra FDA’s “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” initiative, which aims to strengthen food safety compliance across the state. Inspection teams have been conducting surprise visits to restaurants, hotels, eateries, and food businesses to check whether they are adhering to prescribed hygiene standards.
Officials have made it clear that establishments found violating food safety rules will face strict penalties, including suspension or cancellation of licences if necessary.
Follows Action Against K Rustom & Co.
The suspension of the three restaurants comes only days after the FDA took similar action against the iconic K Rustom & Co., where inspections also reportedly uncovered hygiene-related concerns.
The consecutive actions indicate that the department is adopting a zero-tolerance approach toward businesses that fail to meet mandatory food safety requirements, regardless of their popularity or reputation.
FDA Issues Strong Warning
The Food and Drug Administration has warned that inspections will continue across Maharashtra and that no establishment will be exempt from scrutiny.
Officials stated that restaurants and food businesses that compromise customer health by ignoring hygiene standards could face immediate suspension of operations or closure. They urged all food establishments to regularly maintain cleanliness, store food properly, keep updated food safety records, and comply with all provisions under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Public Health Remains the Priority
The Maharashtra FDA reiterated that the primary objective of the campaign is to safeguard consumers by ensuring that food served in restaurants and eateries is prepared under hygienic conditions.
As inspections continue across the state, authorities have urged food business operators to take corrective measures immediately and comply with safety norms to avoid strict regulatory action.
The department has also encouraged consumers to remain vigilant and report any unhygienic practices or suspected food safety violations, reinforcing that public health will remain the top priority under the “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” initiative.
