Akola Records Highest Temperature at 46.9°C
In Maharashtra, Akola emerged as the hottest location in the country, recording a scorching 46.9°C. It was closely followed by Amravati at 46.8°C, Banda in Uttar Pradesh at 46.6°C, and Wardha and Barmer at 46.4°C.
Other regions such as Jaisalmer and Yavatmal also reported temperatures around 46°C, highlighting how the heatwave is affecting both desert and non-desert regions with similar intensity.
Uttar Pradesh Issues Heatwave Alert in 60 Districts
The situation has become particularly concerning in Uttar Pradesh, where authorities have issued heatwave alerts across 60 districts. Residents have been advised to avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and stay well-hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
In Varanasi, hospitals have stepped up preparedness by setting up dedicated heatstroke units. These include cooling rooms, additional beds, and emergency facilities such as specialised treatment areas for severe heatstroke cases.

Across several states, healthcare systems are being placed on high alert as part of the response to the worsening heatwave. Medical staff have been instructed to remain prepared for a potential rise in heat-related cases, especially during peak daytime hours.

The heatwave has affected large parts of central and northern India:
- Madhya Pradesh: Khajuraho recorded 45°C, while Indore and Bhopal hovered around 43°C
- Bihar: Temperatures crossed 40°C in 11 districts, with reports of heat-related fatalities in some areas
- Uttarakhand: Dehradun ordered closure of schools and anganwadi centres from classes 1 to 12 due to extreme heat

Meteorological forecasts suggest that the heatwave will continue for at least the next 48 hours. On April 28, states including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Punjab are expected to remain under intense heatwave conditions.
By April 29, the heat is likely to persist in northern and central India, while some northeastern regions may experience rainfall, creating sharp regional contrasts in weather conditions.
