Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s Ranabaali has brought the couple back together on screen, but one of the film’s most emotional moments also left Vijay’s family deeply moved. The actor recently revealed that his mother broke down sobbing while watching the historical drama, forcing him to remind her that what she was seeing was only a movie.

Speaking to the press in Hyderabad after the film’s release, Vijay opened up about the emotional impact of the film and the experience of watching its final cut. He also spoke about Rashmika’s character, Jayamma, describing her as his favourite and sharing how seeing her dressed as a bride on set affected him personally.

Vijay Deverakonda’s mother could not control her tears

Vijay revealed that he had watched Ranabaali three times—twice during the editing process and once more when he watched the final version with its computer-generated imagery and music. However, even after seeing the film several times, the finished version left him emotional.

Recalling the experience, Vijay said he felt himself choking up while watching the scenes. His mother, who was sitting behind him, became so overwhelmed that she began sobbing loudly.

The actor said he repeatedly tried to reassure her, telling her, “Mummy, this is just a movie.” But she continued crying, and Vijay eventually asked Rushi to sit with her for a while and console her.

He admitted that his mother’s reaction was particularly striking because the family was watching the film in public, where they would not usually express their emotions so openly.

Rashmika Mandanna had to console Vijay’s mother

According to Vijay, the film’s emotional scenes affected his mother so deeply that Rashmika also had to step in to comfort her. The moment highlighted just how intensely the story had affected those watching it, especially people close to the actor.

Vijay added that the reaction was not limited to his family. Some of his childhood friends were also moved by the film. One of his school friends reportedly began crying during a scene and later admitted that he could not control his tears.

For Vijay, these reactions reflected the intensity of Ranabaali and the painful subject it explores. He acknowledged that his mother’s emotional response was understandable, but seeing his friends react in the same way made him realise how strongly the story could affect different audiences.

Vijay calls Rashmika’s Jayamma his favourite character

Vijay also spoke affectionately about Rashmika’s character, Jayamma, calling her his favourite in the film.

“I love Jayamma. I love her off-screen, I love her on-screen,” he said, adding that Jayamma would always be his first priority.

The actor recalled the first time he saw Rashmika in character on set. It was the scene in which Jayamma enters Ranabaali’s house wearing her wedding saree. Since Vijay and Rashmika were not married at the time, seeing her dressed as a bride made the moment especially emotional for him.

Their real-life relationship added another layer to the experience of playing a couple on screen. Vijay’s comments offered a glimpse into how their personal connection influenced his response to Jayamma and the relationship at the centre of the story.

Vijay says an emotional scene caused him physical pain

The actor also discussed a key scene between Ranabaali and Jayamma in the second half of the film. Vijay said performing the sequence was difficult because the fear and pain involved felt physically real to him, even though he knew he was acting.

He explained that his body seemed unable to separate the emotions of the scene from the reality of the moment. The experience, he said, left a lasting impression on him.

His comments suggest that the scene was emotionally demanding to perform and remained with him even after filming had ended.

Ranabaali reunites Vijay and Rashmika on screen

Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Ranabaali was released in theatres on October 16. The historical drama stars Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, alongside Arnold Vosloo.

The film marks the couple’s on-screen reunion after their earlier collaborations in Geetha Govindam (2018) and Dear Comrade (2019). Their pairing became popular with audiences, although they did not work together again for several years.

Vijay and Rashmika married in Udaipur in February this year after getting engaged in October last year. Ranabaali is their first release together since their marriage, adding further interest to their reunion on screen.

The film has received mixed reactions from critics and audiences. While viewers have discussed its performances, storytelling and intense emotional scenes, Vijay’s account of his mother’s reaction has drawn attention to the personal impact the film had on him and those closest to him.

For Vijay, Ranabaali appears to have been more than just another release. Its demanding scenes, his connection with Rashmika’s character and his family’s emotional response have made the experience particularly memorable.
