So proud of you Ranbir and of every single person who brought their heart and soul to this incredible experience at the movies. Some stories are bigger than all of us and Ramayana is one of them.”

Ranbir Kapoor leads the ambitious Ramayana

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is an adaptation of Valmiki’s epic and also draws from other versions of the story, including Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi essays the role of Sita, Yash appears as Ravana, and Ravi Dubey plays Lakshman. The film has been in the making for several years and has generated considerable excitement among cinema lovers.

Reportedly mounted on a budget of around ₹4,000 crore for its two parts, the project is among the most ambitious Indian film productions. The film also features visual effects by DNEG, the Oscar-winning visual effects studio. Sony Pictures has partnered with the makers for its international distribution, with the film reportedly receiving a massive global theatrical release.

Ramayana receives positive reviews from audiences

The film has opened to positive reactions, with its grand visuals, performances and treatment of the epic receiving attention. An excerpt from the Hindustan Times review described Ranbir’s performance as a mixed bag, noting that he handles the action sequences effortlessly but does not always evoke the same sense of devotion associated with Arun Govil’s iconic portrayal of Rama. Govil, who played Lord Rama in the popular television series Ramayan, appears in the film as King Dashrath.

The review also praised the film’s visual scale and the attention given to important moments from the epic. From Ravana’s takeover of Lanka and his devotion to Lord Shiva to Kaikeyi’s realisation of her mistake, the makers have attempted to bring familiar parts of the story to the big screen while respecting how audiences remember them.

With Ramayana now playing in theatres, Ranbir’s performance and the film’s visual spectacle are attracting attention. However, it is Alia’s affectionate post and the adorable glimpse of Ranbir with Raha that have added a particularly emotional touch to the film’s big release day.
