Mumbai and several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are facing one of the most intense spells of the monsoon season after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous weather conditions. The relentless downpour has disrupted transport, forced school closures, triggered landslides, and prompted authorities to urge residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Rail and Road Connectivity Hit by Landslides
Heavy rainfall has severely affected travel between Mumbai and Pune after multiple landslides occurred in the Bhor Ghat section.
Rail services have been badly disrupted, with 16 trains cancelled and several others diverted due to safety concerns. Road connectivity has also taken a major hit as both the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai–Pune Highway were temporarily closed following landslides, flooding, and debris on the roads.
Authorities are carrying out restoration work and have advised commuters to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve.
Schools and Colleges Shut Across Mumbai
Keeping student safety in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all government, private, municipal, aided, and unaided schools and colleges across Mumbai.
The decision came after the IMD forecast extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. While educational institutions remain closed, government and private offices continue to function, although citizens have been urged to work from home wherever possible and avoid unnecessary movement.
IMD Issues Red Alert
The IMD has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and surrounding regions.
Strong winds with speeds reaching 80–90 kmph are expected to accompany the rain, increasing the risk of falling trees, damaged structures, and flooding.
Following the warning, the BMC advised residents to:
- Stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary.
- Avoid beaches, seafronts, rivers, waterfalls, and low-lying areas.
- Stay away from trees, old buildings, hoardings, and electric poles.
- Avoid parking vehicles beneath trees.
- Follow official weather updates and emergency advisories.
Reservoir Levels Improve
While the heavy rainfall has caused widespread disruption, it has also brought positive news for Mumbai’s water supply.
The city’s seven reservoirs now hold approximately 2,44,900 million litres of water, accounting for nearly 16.92% of their total useful live storage capacity.
Officials remain hopeful that continued rainfall over the coming days will significantly improve water reserves and ensure a more stable water supply for the city.
Maharashtra Government on High Alert
The severe weather also affected the functioning of the Maharashtra Legislature, which was adjourned in view of the worsening conditions.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that Maharashtra is witnessing unprecedented weather conditions and warned that wind speeds could increase further over the next few days.

He appealed to people to avoid visiting beaches, waterfalls, and monsoon tourist destinations while assuring that disaster response teams, civic authorities, and emergency services remain on high alert across the state.
Tree Fall Injures Two
Heavy rain and strong winds also led to another tree fall incident in Maharashtra’s Mira-Bhayandar area, where two people sustained injuries.
Emergency response teams quickly reached the spot, rescued those affected, and cleared the fallen tree. Authorities continue to monitor vulnerable areas as the risk of similar incidents remains high during the ongoing weather conditions.
High Tide Warning Issued
Adding to the concern, a high tide warning has also been issued for Mumbai’s coastline.
The BMC has asked residents to stay away from beaches and coastal areas as rough sea conditions, combined with heavy rainfall, could lead to flooding in low-lying regions.
Emergency teams have been deployed across Mumbai, and the civic body has asked citizens to report emergencies through the BMC helpline (1916).
Authorities Urge Citizens to Stay Safe
With heavy rain expected to continue, officials have stressed the importance of following weather advisories and avoiding unnecessary travel.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors whenever possible, keep emergency contacts handy, avoid flooded roads, and rely only on official updates issued by the IMD, BMC, and state authorities.
As Mumbai battles another spell of intense monsoon weather, emergency agencies remain on alert to minimise disruptions and ensure public safety until conditions improve.
