Singer-turned-politician and BJP MLA Maithili Thakur has found herself at the centre of an online debate after she was seen arriving at Mumbai’s famous Lalbaugcha Raja pandal in a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

A video of Maithili arriving in the blue, chauffeur-driven luxury SUV quickly went viral on social media. Some users questioned how a young politician could be seen travelling in such an expensive car, while others began discussing her declared assets and lifestyle.

However, there is an important point that has also been raised in reports: there has been no confirmation that the Rolls-Royce actually belongs to Maithili Thakur. Reports have noted that it is unclear whether the vehicle was owned, rented or arranged for the occasion.

The online discussion nevertheless quickly turned into trolling, with some people questioning whether a politician should be seen enjoying such an expensive lifestyle.

Kangana Ranaut Defends Maithili Thakur

Amid the criticism, BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut came out in support of Maithili.

Kangana questioned why politicians who enter public life are expected to give up every aspect of their personal success and live without comfort. She argued that politicians can work for the public while also having their own careers, personal lives and sources of income.

Her larger argument was that simply being a politician should not automatically mean that a person has to live a poor or uncomfortable life.

The controversy has therefore raised an interesting question: does becoming a politician mean a person has to give up the lifestyle they had before entering politics?

Can Politicians Not Live Well?

Maithili Thakur is not only a politician but also a singer who has been performing from a young age. Her career in music existed before her political journey, and she has built a public identity beyond politics.

That is why Kangana’s argument has resonated with some supporters. Their point is that public service and personal success do not necessarily have to be treated as opposites.

At the same time, the questions raised by social media users cannot simply be dismissed either. When a public representative is seen around an extremely expensive asset, people can reasonably ask questions about its ownership or source, particularly when there is a significant difference between publicly declared assets and what appears in viral videos.

But there is a major difference between asking a legitimate question and personally trolling someone.

If the ownership of the car has not been established, automatically claiming that Maithili bought a ₹10–13 crore Rolls-Royce would go beyond the available information. The reported Mumbai on-road price of a Cullinan can exceed ₹13 crore, but the vehicle seen with Maithili has not been publicly confirmed as her personal property.

Why Does a Politician’s Lifestyle Become Such a Big Issue?

The controversy also reflects a larger social-media habit. Whenever a politician is seen wearing expensive clothes, travelling in a luxury car or enjoying a lavish lifestyle, people immediately begin questioning whether they should be living that way.

But politicians are also individuals with careers, families, personal choices and, in some cases, professional lives outside politics.

The real issue should be whether public money is being misused or whether there is any violation of the law — not simply whether a politician is seen living comfortably.

If an expensive car is privately owned, borrowed, rented or arranged for an event, those are different situations. The facts matter before conclusions are drawn.

Trolling vs Accountability

This is perhaps the most important part of the entire controversy.

Public figures should be open to legitimate questions, especially when public office and finances are involved. But criticism should remain based on facts rather than assumptions.

Calling someone out simply because they are seen in a luxury vehicle is different from asking a factual question about how the vehicle was acquired or whether it was properly declared.

The Maithili Thakur controversy therefore goes beyond one Rolls-Royce or one visit to Lalbaugcha Raja. It raises a larger question about how society views successful politicians.

Can someone enter politics, work for the public and still enjoy the rewards of a career they built before entering public life?

Kangana Ranaut clearly believes the answer is yes. Her defence has now added another layer to the debate surrounding Maithili.

For now, the Rolls-Royce’s ownership remains unconfirmed. What is clear is that a single appearance at Lalbaugcha Raja has turned into a much bigger conversation about wealth, public life, political accountability and the difference between legitimate scrutiny and unnecessary trolling.
