Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has suffered a legal setback in his attempt to stop the release of the upcoming film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy. The Delhi High Court on Friday declined to grant any immediate relief to the actor and postponed the matter for a detailed hearing on July 1.
The dispute revolves around Salman Khan’s claim that the film is an unauthorized portrayal of events linked to his controversial 1998 blackbuck poaching case and the long-standing public attention surrounding the Bishnoi community and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. According to the actor’s legal team, the makers have drawn heavily from his life and public image without seeking permission.
During the hearing, Salman Khan’s counsel argued that the filmmakers have no legal right to create a project based on his life or controversies. The actor’s lawyers maintained that while the film may not directly mention Salman Khan by name, several elements clearly point toward him. They claimed the protagonist resembles the actor, sports a turquoise bracelet similar to the one Salman is known for wearing, and appears in scenes involving firearms, which they say could damage his reputation.

The legal team further argued that such portrayals could mislead audiences and commercially exploit Salman Khan’s identity. They stressed that the actor had never authorized the filmmakers to use any aspect of his life story and that the film appeared to be capitalizing on a highly publicized chapter of his personal and legal history.
However, the filmmakers strongly opposed the request for an immediate stay. Their lawyers informed the court that they had received only partial legal documents and needed adequate time to prepare a response. They also revealed that members of the production team have allegedly been receiving death threats due to the sensitive subject matter of the film and have already approached the police regarding security concerns.
After hearing both sides, Justice Madhu Jain refused to grant interim relief and directed Salman Khan’s legal team to provide complete copies of all court filings and supporting documents to the filmmakers. The matter has now been transferred to a regular bench for further proceedings on July 1.
The actor’s lawyers made one final attempt to secure an earlier hearing date, but the court declined the request, stating that the schedule had already been fixed.
Meanwhile, producer Amit Jani has defended the project, insisting that Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy is not a biopic on Salman Khan. According to him, the film focuses on the history, beliefs and wildlife conservation efforts of the Bishnoi community. He also clarified that the movie neither portrays Salman Khan negatively nor glorifies Lawrence Bishnoi, adding that the narrative is based on information already available in the public domain.
With the High Court yet to examine the merits of the case, the controversy surrounding Kala Hiran continues to intensify. The upcoming hearing is expected to determine whether the film can move ahead toward release or face legal restrictions, keeping both the film industry and Salman Khan’s fans closely watching the developments.
