IPL 2026 Final Shifted to Ahmedabad as BCCI Confirms New Playoff Venues

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced a major change to the Indian Premier League 2026 schedule, confirming that the final will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on May 31 instead of the originally designated M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The decision marks a significant departure from tradition, as the IPL final is typically hosted at the home ground of the defending champions. With Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning the previous edition, Bengaluru was expected to stage the marquee clash this season.

Why the venue was changed

In its official statement, the BCCI cited “operational and logistical considerations” for the shift, noting that certain requirements from local authorities and the state association in Bengaluru fell outside its established protocols.

“Bengaluru was originally designated to host the Final. However, owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned,” the board stated.

While no further details were disclosed, the move underscores the complexities involved in organizing high-profile sporting events, particularly when administrative or local conditions do not align with governing standards.

Ahmedabad hosts final for second straight year

This will be the second consecutive season that the IPL final is held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world. In 2025, the final had to be moved from Kolkata’s Eden Gardens due to adverse weather forecasts.

With its massive capacity and world-class infrastructure, the Ahmedabad venue once again becomes the stage for the tournament’s biggest match.

Playoffs to be held across three venues

As part of a “special case” arrangement, the IPL 2026 playoffs will be split across three venues:

  • Qualifier 1 (May 26): HPCA Stadium
  • Eliminator (May 27): New International Cricket Stadium
  • Qualifier 2 (May 29): New International Cricket Stadium
  • Final (May 31): Narendra Modi Stadium

Dharamshala and New Chandigarh—home venues of the 2025 runners-up Punjab Kings—will host the initial playoff matches before the tournament concludes in Ahmedabad.

A unique end to IPL 2026

After 70 high-intensity league matches, the IPL now heads into its निर्णायक phase with a revised structure and venues. While Bengaluru misses out on hosting the final despite RCB’s championship win, fans can still expect a grand finale in Ahmedabad, where the world’s biggest cricket stadium is set to deliver another spectacular conclusion to the season.
