The makers of Batwara 1947, one of the most awaited films of 2026, have finally unveiled its first look, giving audiences a glimpse into the emotional world of the period drama. Earlier known as Lahore 1947, the film stars Sunny Deol in the lead role and is backed by Aamir Khan Productions.
The motion poster presents a striking image of Sunny Deol holding a burning torch while protecting his family against a backdrop of chaos and uncertainty. The makers shared the first look with the message, “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage,” setting the tone for a story centred on humanity and survival during one of the darkest chapters in Indian history.
The first look has also sparked comparisons with Sunny Deol’s iconic hand pump scene from Gadar. While the actor became synonymous with the hand pump as a symbol of strength and defiance, Batwara 1947 introduces a torch as his new symbol representing hope, courage and the fight to protect loved ones during difficult times.

The film also marks the much-awaited return of Preity Zinta to the big screen. She reunites with Sunny Deol after sharing screen space with him in films like Farz, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy and Bhaiji Superhit. Fans are eager to watch the popular pair together once again.
Apart from Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, the film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol in important roles. The project is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, known for delivering memorable patriotic and emotional dramas.
Interestingly, the film underwent a title change before its release. Reports suggest that the makers initially wanted to move away from the title Lahore 1947 and felt that Batwara would better capture the essence of the story. However, the rights to the title were owned by the family of late producer Salim Akhtar, who had produced the 1989 film Batwara.
According to reports, Aamir Khan personally met Salim Akhtar’s family to explain the vision behind the project and why the title suited the film’s subject. After discussions, the family agreed to transfer the rights, allowing the makers to officially rename the film Batwara 1947.
Set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India, the film explores the pain of separation, the loss of identity and the human relationships that survive even during times of violence and conflict. Rather than focusing only on history, the story aims to highlight courage, sacrifice and the resilience of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.
With its powerful first look, strong cast and an emotional historical backdrop, Batwara 1947 has already generated significant excitement among movie lovers. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14, 2026, just ahead of Independence Day, making its release even more meaningful.
