Subhash Ghai Explains Why He’s Stepping Back From Directing ‘Khalnayak Returns’
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has clarified why he will not return as director for the much-talked-about sequel Khalnayak Returns, starring Sanjay Dutt. The original 1993 cult film Khalnayak, which he directed and produced, remains one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic action dramas.
In a recent interview, Ghai revealed that while the idea of a sequel has been close to Sanjay Dutt’s heart for years, he personally feels it is time for a new creative voice to take over the project.
“I Am Not the Right Director”: Ghai on Passing the Baton
Speaking to Bombay Times, Subhash Ghai said that Sanjay Dutt had been passionate about the sequel for a long time, even during difficult phases of his life.
“Sanju was passionate about making this sequel for years… I sent him the concept and story,” Ghai shared.
However, he also made it clear that he does not wish to remake his own work at this stage.
“If you ask me, no one can make this film the way I did. However, I don’t want to remake my own film; besides, I am 80 now,” he said, explaining his decision to step away from directing.
Instead, Ghai suggested a collaborative role, adding that he is open to being a creative producer while another filmmaker directs the project.
“I told Sanju, if you are so keen, why don’t you produce it yourself, and I can be your creative producer,” he added.
Possible Cameo Still on the Cards
Despite stepping back from direction, Ghai expressed his emotional connection with Sanjay Dutt, calling him “like a son.” He also hinted that he may still appear in the film in a small role.
“Sanju is like my son, so I will do it for him… I also did one for Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om,” he said.
Sanjay Dutt’s Emotional Connection With ‘Khalnayak’
Sanjay Dutt, who played the iconic anti-hero Ballu in the 1993 blockbuster, has repeatedly said that Khalnayak Returns would not be possible without Ghai’s involvement.
Last week, Dutt confirmed that Ghai would remain part of the project in some capacity, calling him a “legend and man of entertainment.”
“The journey of Khalnayak has been long and without Subhash ji it wouldn’t have been possible,” Dutt said.
Origin of the Sequel Idea
Dutt also revealed an unusual origin story for the sequel’s concept, dating back to his time in jail during the 1993 Mumbai blast case.
He said he discussed the idea with fellow inmates and even collected handwritten inputs from them, which he later shared with Ghai.
“When I came out on parole, I asked Subhash sir to go through it. After that, he said it should be made,” Dutt recalled.
What We Know So Far About ‘Khalnayak Returns’
While the project has been officially confirmed through rights acquisition by Dutt’s production house and collaborators, key details remain under wraps. It is still unclear whether Khalnayak Returns will be a sequel, reboot, or a completely new interpretation of the original story.
The 1993 film, which also starred Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit, remains a landmark in Bollywood’s action-crime genre.
More updates on the director, cast, and storyline are expected to be announced soon.
