Taapsee Pannu is once again making headlines after opening up about the kind of films she would and would not want to be a part of. Although the actor did not name any particular film, she spoke about the increasing focus on violence and “shock value” in some recent movies.
Taapsee is currently busy promoting her upcoming film Gandhari. Over the years, she has established herself as an actor who is willing to take on strong, female-centric roles in films such as Pink, Thappad and Haseen Dillruba.
During an interaction with Sachin Mehrotra while promoting Gandhari, Taapsee was asked whether the kind of theatrical films being released today are different from what audiences saw around 2015.
Looking back at that period, Taapsee admitted that it was almost a dream era for actors like her because there was a time when she wondered whether someone like her could even have a successful career in the industry.
She said that at the time, only a certain kind of films and performances were getting major attention, but she considers herself privileged to have had the freedom to begin her career during that phase.
Taapsee also revealed that she recently had a conversation with her family about some of the films released in the past few months. Watching the changing trend in cinema made her question whether the industry had reached a point where she would have to make a difficult choice.
She said that she would rather consider retiring than be part of films that rely heavily on violence and shock value.
Taapsee acknowledged that such films may have their own audience, but made it clear that she does not see herself fitting into that kind of cinema.
Her comments come at a time when several films featuring intense violence and darker themes have generated strong reactions among audiences. While some viewers enjoy the larger-than-life treatment, others have questioned the growing glorification of violence on screen.
Meanwhile, Gandhari, directed by Devanshi Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, is expected to present Taapsee in another intense role. The film revolves around a mother and her emotional journey, adding another female-driven project to the actor’s filmography.
With her latest comments, Taapsee has once again made her position clear: she wants to choose roles that challenge her as an actor rather than simply becoming part of a trend driven by violence or shock value.
