Shahid Afridi Appeals for Unity as Petrol Prices Soar to PKR 458 Amid Global Energy Crisis
Petrol prices in Pakistan have surged to an unprecedented PKR 458 per litre, as global energy markets reel from geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. The rise, part of a 42.7 percent increase in petrol and a 54.9 percent jump in diesel prices, reflects the ongoing volatility caused by conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran in West Asia.
Amid this challenging scenario, former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has called on citizens to support the government and stand united in facing the economic pressures. In a video message, Afridi emphasized the importance of national solidarity and cooperation, urging Pakistanis to follow government guidelines to minimize obstacles to the country’s progress.
“Assalamualaikum friends, I am Shahid Afridi. Because of the war, the global energy crisis that the world is facing right now—Pakistan, Alhamdulillah, is still in a much better position than many countries. Supporting the government and backing them is the most important thing. As Pakistanis, we should try to follow the steps that the government has taken so that there is no obstacle in the progress of the country,” Afridi said.
The surge in fuel prices has added further pressure on households and businesses already grappling with inflation, making daily life more challenging for many citizens. The federal minister, Ali Pervaiz Malik, confirmed the new rates, stating that petrol will cost PKR 458.40 per litre (approximately $1.64) effective from Friday, aligning with international market trends.
Afridi’s appeal has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters view his message as a patriotic call for unity in difficult times, while critics argue that soaring fuel costs exacerbate the financial struggles of ordinary Pakistanis. This divide underscores the tension between fostering national resilience and addressing the immediate economic hardships faced by the population.
As Pakistan navigates this global energy crisis, public solidarity and strategic government measures will play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of rising fuel costs on the economy and everyday life.
