The Supreme Court has imposed a ₹3 lakh cost on comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina after finding that he failed to comply with the commitments he had made before the Court in a matter related to remarks involving persons with disabilities.

The Bench expressed strong displeasure during the hearing, observing that Raina had not followed the directions issued earlier and had instead failed to honour the undertaking given to the Court. The judges remarked that his conduct amounted to taking the Court lightly and said that such assurances given during legal proceedings must be taken seriously.

The issue dates back to a controversy over comments made during a comedy-related programme that allegedly hurt the sentiments of persons with disabilities. Following the matter, proceedings were initiated, and the Supreme Court sought corrective measures from the individuals involved.

As part of the undertaking submitted before the Court, Samay Raina and other comedians were directed to organise special programmes that would focus on the achievements, struggles, and contributions of persons with disabilities. The Court had also asked them to ensure participation of specially-abled individuals in these events to promote awareness and inclusivity.

The purpose of the direction was not only to address the concerns raised over the remarks but also to encourage a more sensitive approach towards disability-related issues in public conversations.

However, during the latest hearing, the Court was informed that the promised initiatives had not been carried out as directed. Taking note of the failure to comply, the Bench questioned why the undertaking given before the Court was not followed.

The Supreme Court initially considered imposing a higher penalty but later decided to limit the cost to ₹3 lakh. Raina has been ordered to deposit the amount within a period of two weeks.

While reducing the penalty, the Court made it clear that future non-compliance could invite stricter action. The Bench warned that if the Court remains dissatisfied with further developments, additional consequences may follow.

The order highlights the importance of respecting commitments made before the judiciary. The Court also reiterated that public personalities, especially those with large online audiences, have a responsibility to ensure that their content does not promote insensitivity or harm towards vulnerable communities.

Samay Raina, known for his stand-up comedy and popular YouTube content, has built a large following among young audiences. The controversy has sparked wider discussions about freedom of expression, comedy boundaries, and the responsibility of creators while addressing sensitive social issues.

The matter continues to remain under judicial observation, with the Court awaiting compliance with its directions.
