Pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce‘s lavish wedding at Madison Square Garden may have been one of the biggest celebrity events of the year, but it also sparked controversy after road closures and heavy police deployment led to criticism from some New Yorkers.
Now, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has addressed the issue, confirming that the couple had already paid the city more than $160,000 to cover the cost of permits and additional police security required for the high-profile celebration.
The wedding, held on July 4, reportedly welcomed around 1,000 guests, transforming the iconic Madison Square Garden into a breathtaking secret garden for the occasion. However, because the event coincided with America’s Independence Day celebrations, several roads in Midtown Manhattan were temporarily closed, leading to traffic disruptions and concerns about police resources.
Many residents questioned whether taxpayers would end up paying for the additional security required for such a star-studded event.
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Mamdani clarified that this was not the case.
According to the mayor, Taylor Swift had already paid the required amount to the city before the event took place.
He explained that the permit, which included the cost of police response and security arrangements, amounted to more than $160,000 and had been finalised just days before the wedding.
The clarification came after reports suggested that hundreds of police officers were deployed around the venue, prompting criticism from some political leaders and members of the public.
Among those who questioned the arrangements was New York Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, who argued that police officers were already working overtime because of the city’s Independence Day celebrations.
She had publicly stated that the couple should reimburse the New York Police Department for the additional manpower required to secure the wedding.
However, Mayor Mamdani’s statement confirmed that the security costs had already been covered through the official permit process, meaning taxpayers were not footing the bill.
Despite the criticism, Taylor and Travis reportedly went beyond paying the required fees. According to reports, the couple also donated $26 million to 20 different charities across the United States as part of their wedding celebrations.
The wedding itself was nothing short of spectacular. Reports claim the celebrations cost over $30 million, making it one of the most expensive celebrity weddings in recent years.
Madison Square Garden was transformed into an elegant floral paradise, with nearly 1,000 guests attending the ceremony.
The star-studded guest list included celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Dakota Johnson, Mariska Hargitay, Peter Hermann, and many others. Actor and comedian Adam Sandler reportedly officiated the wedding ceremony.
While the event drew criticism for its impact on city traffic and police deployment, Mayor Mamdani’s clarification has settled one of the biggest questions surrounding the wedding—confirming that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce paid the city for the necessary permits and security, ensuring that the additional arrangements did not become a burden on New York taxpayers.
