Education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continues to remain under medical supervision at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi as his indefinite hunger strike enters another critical phase. While doctors have said that his vital signs are currently stable, they have expressed concern over several health complications caused by his prolonged fast.
According to the latest medical bulletin issued by Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk’s blood sugar levels remain lower than normal. Doctors also reported that his potassium levels are below the healthy range, requiring continuous monitoring and treatment.
The medical team further stated that Wangchuk is suffering from persistent pancytopenia, a condition in which the body has lower-than-normal levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This has resulted in anaemia and reduced immunity, making regular medical observation essential.

Despite repeated advice from doctors, Wangchuk has continued to refuse intravenous fluids and glucose. However, he is accepting oral rehydration solution (ORS) and potassium supplements to help manage his condition.
Doctors also noted that he is experiencing mild to moderate dehydration along with other physiological changes associated with prolonged fasting. They have stressed that continuous medical supervision is necessary to prevent further complications and ensure timely treatment if his condition worsens.
Protest Continues Despite Hospitalisation
Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated during his hunger strike in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest. Even after being admitted, he has maintained that he wishes to continue his fast and has repeatedly sought permission to return to the protest site.
Meanwhile, the CJP movement continues across the national capital. On Monday, thousands of supporters participated in the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march towards Parliament, leading to clashes with police, traffic disruptions, detentions, and heavy security deployment in several parts of Delhi.
Following the protest, Delhi Police registered FIRs against unidentified individuals in connection with alleged stone-pelting, vandalism of police vehicles, damage to public property, and obstruction of police personnel near Connaught Place and Parliament Street.
Authorities said investigations are underway to identify those involved in the violence during the demonstration.
As Sonam Wangchuk remains under medical care, his health continues to be closely monitored, while the nationwide debate over the CJP-led movement and its demands for education reforms and accountability remains in the spotlight.
