After making a successful directorial debut with Uppena, director Buchi Babu Sana returns with Peddi, an ambitious sports drama headlined by Ram Charan. Packed with emotion, action, sports and larger-than-life moments, the film aims to deliver a unique cinematic experience. While it succeeds in many areas, a lengthy runtime and a few underwhelming subplots prevent it from becoming a flawless entertainer.
At its core, Peddi is a story of dreams, resilience and determination. Set against the backdrop of rural Andhra Pradesh, the film follows a gifted young man who battles personal struggles and social challenges while chasing a better future. Instead of relying entirely on commercial masala elements, Buchi Babu Sana attempts to tell a more layered story, giving the film a distinctive identity.
One of the biggest strengths of Peddi is its spectacular sports sequences. The cricket portions in the first half are engaging and energetic, while the kushti (wrestling) training and competition scenes add both intensity and emotional weight. The film reaches its peak during the thrilling race sequence towards the climax, which is executed with remarkable scale and impact.
However, the narrative isn’t without its shortcomings. At over three hours, the film often feels stretched. Several scenes could have been trimmed to make the storytelling sharper and more effective. The romantic track, in particular, emerges as one of the weaker aspects of the film, lacking the emotional depth needed to leave a lasting impression. Certain portions in the second half also feel repetitive, slowing down the overall momentum.

Despite these issues, Ram Charan ensures that the film remains engaging throughout. Carrying much of the narrative on his shoulders, the actor delivers one of the finest performances of his career. The role demands both physical transformation and emotional vulnerability, and Charan handles both with remarkable ease. Whether it’s the intense sports sequences or the emotionally charged moments, he commands the screen with confidence and conviction.
Janhvi Kapoor, unfortunately, is let down by a character that lacks proper development. While she performs sincerely, her role deserved stronger writing. Veteran actor Shiva Rajkumar leaves a strong impact with his commanding presence, while Jagapathi Babu delivers yet another solid performance. Divyenndu is effective in his role, and supporting actors Boman Irani, Ravi Kishan and Upendra Limaye add depth to the narrative.
The technical aspects of Peddi are among its biggest highlights. A.R. Rahman’s music complements the emotional tone of the film, with “Chikiri” emerging as a standout track. His background score elevates several key moments, enhancing the film’s emotional and dramatic impact. Cinematographer R. Rathnavelu captures both the sporting action and rural landscapes beautifully, giving the film a grand visual appeal.
While Peddi doesn’t entirely escape the pitfalls of an overlong screenplay, it delivers enough memorable moments to keep audiences invested. The film is elevated by Ram Charan’s exceptional performance, strong emotional beats and impressive sports sequences, making it a worthwhile theatrical experience.
