Padma Bhushan Winner Alka Yagnik Reflects on Contemporary Music: “Music Today Has Lost Its Soul”

New Delhi, March 30, 2026 – Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik, recently honoured with the Padma Bhushan for her decades-long contribution to Indian music, shared her thoughts on the evolution of the music industry in an exclusive interview with NDTV.

The Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, recognises Yagnik’s immense body of work, which has produced countless timeless melodies over several decades. Expressing her gratitude, she said,

“My daughter told me. I am very happy to hear. I would like to thank Bharat Sarkar for considering me for this honour.”

Known for her soulful and melodious voice, Yagnik also reflected on the current trends in Indian music. She expressed concern over the dominance of loud beats, Punjabi rap, and remixes, suggesting that the essence of soul-stirring music is being lost.

“Music today has lost its soul. Some soulful music should come back for us to hear,” she told NDTV, emphasising the importance of melody and depth in songs that touch the heart.

The singer’s remarks come at a time when the Indian music industry is seeing a surge in high-energy tracks, remixes, and fusion genres that often prioritise beats over melody.

A Career Celebrated

Alka Yagnik’s career spans over four decades, during which she has delivered numerous chart-topping hits in Bollywood. Her voice has been the hallmark of romance, devotion, and emotion, making her one of the most celebrated playback singers in Indian cinema.

The Padma Bhushan award adds another milestone to her illustrious journey, recognising not just her contribution to music but also her enduring influence on generations of artists and listeners.

“It’s humbling to receive this honour, and it inspires me to continue sharing music with love,” Yagnik added.

As India’s music scene evolves, the veteran singer’s call for a return to soulful compositions serves as a reminder of the timeless magic of melody and emotion in music.
