A shocking incident aboard a Mumbai local train has triggered a massive police manhunt after a 22-year-old passenger lost his life following a violent altercation in a first-class compartment of a Churchgate–Nalasopara Fast local train.
The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, was allegedly stabbed during an argument over whether the train’s door should remain open amid heavy rainfall. What began as a dispute between passengers quickly escalated into a tragic act of violence, leaving commuters stunned.
According to preliminary reports, the confrontation took place while the train was crowded with daily commuters. Witnesses claimed that a disagreement broke out regarding the train door, with some passengers wanting it closed due to the rain while others preferred it open for ventilation and convenience.
The argument allegedly turned physical, during which Mayank sustained serious injuries. Fellow passengers immediately alerted railway authorities and helped rush him to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali.
Despite receiving medical treatment, the 22-year-old succumbed to his injuries, turning the incident into a murder investigation.
In response, the Mumbai Railway Police launched an extensive search operation to trace the suspect, who fled after the attack. Officials formed seven dedicated investigation teams tasked with tracking down the accused from different locations across Mumbai and its surrounding regions.
Police teams have been examining CCTV footage from railway stations, collecting statements from passengers who witnessed the incident and analysing travel records to identify the suspect’s movements before and after the crime.
Authorities have also reportedly questioned several individuals and carried out searches at multiple locations as part of the investigation. However, despite the large-scale operation, the accused remains absconding.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among Mumbai commuters, many of whom have raised questions about safety inside local trains, especially during peak travel hours when overcrowding often leads to arguments and altercations.
Railway officials and police have appealed to the public for any information that could help locate the suspect. Investigators remain confident that the accused will be arrested soon as the search operation continues.
The tragic death of Mayank Lohar has left his family devastated and has once again highlighted the need for stronger security measures on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, one of the busiest public transport systems in the world.
