MI vs RCB: Mumbai Indians Look to Bounce Back at Wankhede Against In-Form Defending Champions
Back in familiar surroundings after another slow start to their IPL campaign, the Mumbai Indians will be desperate to turn things around when they host defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
The five-time champions made a rare winning start to their season with a six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at home—ending a 13-season wait for an opening-match win. However, momentum has slipped away quickly, with MI losing both their away fixtures by heavy margins and currently sitting in eighth place with a concerning net run rate of -0.715.
Batting Concerns Continue for MI
Despite briefly holding the Orange Cap early in the season, Rohit Sharma remains MI’s most consistent batter so far. However, the team’s overall batting unit has struggled for rhythm, with concerns around the form of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma in the middle order.
While Suryakumar Yadav managed a crucial half-century against Delhi Capitals, he failed to convert it into a big knock in the following match against Rajasthan Royals. Meanwhile, captain Hardik Pandya is yet to deliver a significant contribution with the bat this season.
MI’s struggles were further exposed on a batting-friendly surface in Guwahati, where Rajasthan Royals’ top order dominated, and even premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah came under pressure during a rapid powerplay assault.
Team Balance and Selection Questions
Mumbai Indians may consider tactical changes, including bringing in left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to strengthen their bowling attack. The team is also awaiting the availability of English all-rounder Will Jacks to add depth in the middle order.
RCB Arrive With Strong Batting Core
On the other side, RCB enter the contest with confidence despite a recent defeat. Their batting unit has been in excellent touch, led by skipper Rajat Patidar (142 runs), veteran Virat Kohli (129 runs), and an in-form Devdutt Padikkal (125 runs).
Finishing firepower from players like Tim David, along with contributions from Romario Shepherd and Venkatesh Iyer, makes RCB a dangerous batting side capable of posting or chasing big totals.
Bowling Boost for RCB
RCB’s bowling attack also looks strengthened with the return of Josh Hazlewood, who has formed a strong new-ball partnership with experienced India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
High-Pressure Clash at Wankhede
With both teams coming off defeats, the Wankhede clash promises to be a crucial early-season test. MI will rely on home conditions to reset their campaign, while RCB will look to continue their strong batting form and secure another important away win in IPL 2026.
