Former India pacer Munaf Patel has issued a strong warning to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Board of Control for Cricket in India), cautioning against any potential move to remove head coach Gautam Gambhir amid growing debate over the national team’s performances and transition phase.
Gambhir, who took charge of the Indian team after the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, replacing Rahul Dravid, has had a mixed tenure so far. While India has continued to find success in limited-overs cricket—winning the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and T20 World Cup under his leadership—the team’s inconsistent Test results have sparked criticism and speculation over his future.
Amid this backdrop, Munaf Patel, a member of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad, has strongly backed Gambhir and warned that removing him could lead to instability within the dressing room.
“Just remember this, if a head coach like Gautam Gambhir is removed, then handling the players will become very difficult,” Munaf told the Times of India. “He is a genuine person, he calls the truth as it is, and many people don’t like that.”
Munaf further emphasized Gambhir’s reputation for being direct and uncompromising, suggesting that such an approach, while effective, may also create friction within the cricketing ecosystem. He implied that managing senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma requires strong authority and clear communication.
“Man-management is the most important thing. And it is not easy. Try saying no to someone like Virat Kohli. Try saying no to Rohit Sharma,” he added, highlighting the challenges any coach faces when dealing with high-profile senior players.
Munaf also pointed out that Gambhir’s honesty and decision-making style may have earned him detractors, but it also reflects his commitment to accountability and discipline within the team environment.
“Tell me, how many people is Gautam Gambhir making enemies of just to coach the country?” he remarked.
Currently, Munaf Patel is serving as the bowling coach of Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL season, where the team continues to compete in a tightly contested league table.
As discussions around leadership and team direction continue, Munaf’s comments have added a fresh layer to the ongoing debate over India’s cricketing future under Gambhir’s tenure.
