Indian boxing legend Mary Kom has opened up about her disappointment with her 2014 biopic, Mary Kom, starring Priyanka Chopra. The boxer said the film failed to capture the full extent of her struggles, sacrifices and hard work, adding that only a small part of her real-life journey was shown on screen.
Following her eviction from Bigg Boss 20, Mary reflected on both the film and her experience on the reality show. While she felt the biopic did not tell her story accurately, she said Bigg Boss gave audiences an opportunity to see her real personality.
Mary Kom Says Her Biopic Did Not Tell Her Complete Story
When asked whether there could be a sequel to her biopic, Mary said she did not think one was necessary at this point. According to her, her journey has already been covered in the film and her autobiography, Unbreakable. However, she believes the movie did not portray her life as truthfully or completely as she had hoped.
“I don’t think there should be a sequel now; everybody knows my story,” Mary said. She also pointed out that some parts of the film did not feel real to her.
The boxer revealed that the movie showed only around 10 per cent of her struggles and hard work. She said people who want to understand the full depth of her journey should read her book, where she has shared more about the challenges she faced.
Mary also spoke about her hopes for the future, saying she wishes for a smooth and happy life ahead. Addressing questions about whether love could become part of her life, she said that would be a decision she would make in the future.
‘I Was Not Fake’: Mary Kom Reflects on Bigg Boss 20
Mary also spoke about her time inside the Bigg Boss 20 house, saying she was genuine throughout the show. She explained that people who know her personally would recognise the person she presented on television.
“I was not fake,” she said, adding that she felt the show came at the right time in her life. Mary acknowledged that people had formed different opinions about her, but she was not concerned about being judged.
She said she wanted viewers to see the woman behind the sporting achievements — someone who had worked hard, made sacrifices and dedicated much of her life to boxing.
Mary also reflected on how difficult it was to live inside the Bigg Boss house, admitting that there were moments when she wondered how she would manage. However, she said she ultimately enjoyed the experience.
For her, the show was an opportunity to demonstrate her authenticity. She added that it was impossible to pretend to be someone else for seven weeks and felt her actions had shown audiences who she really was.
A Biopic That Celebrated Her Achievements, But Left Her Wanting More
Released in 2014, Mary Kom starred Priyanka Chopra in the lead role and was directed by Omung Kumar. The film followed Mary’s journey from her early life in Manipur to becoming a world champion boxer.
It also explored the personal challenges she faced while balancing her sporting career, motherhood and family responsibilities. The film received critical acclaim and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Despite the film’s recognition, Mary’s latest comments make it clear that she believes her real-life journey was far more demanding and complex than what audiences saw on screen.
Her reflections also offer a glimpse into her Bigg Boss 20 experience, where she says she wanted viewers to see not just the celebrated athlete, but the real person behind her achievements.
