KL Rahul has come under heavy criticism following Delhi Capitals’s 47-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL 2026 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, with questions being raised over his batting intent during a steep run chase.
Chasing a massive target of 243, Delhi Capitals struggled to build momentum despite a solid start from the opposition. SRH had earlier posted a commanding 242/2, powered by a sensational unbeaten 135 off 68 balls from Abhishek Sharma, who tore apart the DC bowling attack with a dominant display.
In response, DC finished at 195/9, never really threatening the target after a cautious approach in the powerplay, where they managed just 59 runs. KL Rahul, opening the innings, scored 37 off 23 deliveries, an innings that included just one boundary and three sixes. While he spent time at the crease, critics argued that the tempo of his knock did not match the demands of the chase.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra was among the most vocal in his assessment, questioning whether DC had shown enough intent while pursuing such a large total. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra suggested that once a team falls behind early in a 240-plus chase, the probability of defeat becomes extremely high.
“I think the question needs to be asked… when you’re chasing a 240-plus total and fail to capitalise on the powerplay, there’s a 99.5 percent chance you’re going to lose the match,” Chopra said, pointing to what he felt was a lack of urgency in the approach.
He further added that while Rahul may have been dealing with a minor fitness concern, the overall intent in the innings still came under scrutiny, especially given the scale of the target.
Chopra also highlighted Rahul’s wicketkeeping performance during the match, pointing out a missed opportunity behind the stumps that gave Abhishek Sharma a crucial lifeline during his explosive innings. He noted that while Rahul is a capable wicketkeeper in international cricket, his primary role remains that of a batter who keeps wickets rather than a specialist in both disciplines.
“Most wicketkeepers are keepers first and then contribute with the bat,” Chopra said, adding that mistakes in key moments can significantly affect overall impact, especially in high-scoring games.
The match itself was heavily dominated by SRH, whose batting display set the tone early. Heinrich Klaasen and the rest of the batting unit provided strong support to Abhishek Sharma, ensuring DC were under pressure throughout the innings.
For Delhi Capitals, the defeat adds to growing concerns about their batting approach in high-pressure chases. While individual contributions have come in patches, consistency in intent and execution remains an area of concern as the tournament progresses.
As IPL 2026 moves forward, attention will now be on how KL Rahul and DC respond to the criticism, with fans and experts alike looking for a more aggressive and cohesive approach in upcoming matches.
