Isha Ambani Elevates Indian Craft at Met Gala 2026 with Regal Saree, Art-Inspired Details and Heritage Storytelling
At the Met Gala 2026, Isha Ambani once again delivered one of the most talked-about Indian appearances of the night, showcasing a look that fused heritage, high fashion, and contemporary art into a single statement.
She arrived in a custom saree designed by Gaurav Gupta, a creation that drew inspiration from Pichwai art traditions. The ensemble featured hand-painted motifs and Gupta’s signature sculptural cape, adding a futuristic silhouette to a deeply traditional base. The saree was woven with pure gold threads by artisans associated with Swadesh, reinforcing the craftsmanship-driven narrative behind the look.

The blouse stood out as a centerpiece of the ensemble, embedded with over 1800 carats of diamonds along with emeralds, polki, and kundan. It also featured a historic sarpech from the Nizam’s jewellery collection, adding a layer of royal heritage to the outfit. Ambani highlighted its personal significance during the red carpet interview, revealing that the blouse incorporated pieces of her mother’s jewellery, turning it into a deeply sentimental creation.
Designer Gaurav Gupta described the outfit as a fusion of inheritance and form, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern couture sensibilities. The result was a garment that blurred the lines between jewellery, textile, and sculpture.
Adding to the artistic narrative, Ambani carried a mango sculpture by contemporary artist Subodh Gupta. Known for transforming everyday objects into large-scale installations, Subodh Gupta’s work aligned with the Met Gala’s “Fashion is Art” theme. The sculpture, placed inside a crochet bag, symbolized India’s cultural abundance and artistic identity.

Her look also extended into hair styling, where she wore a gajra-inspired accessory created by Brooklyn-based artist Sourabh Gupta. Crafted from paper, copper, and brass, the piece reimagined the traditional floral adornment into a modern sculptural form.
Before the main event, Ambani had already set a strong cultural tone at a pre-Met Gala gathering in New York City. Her outfit there featured a bandage dress that mapped India using 26 textile borders, each representing a different regional craft tradition—further reinforcing her ongoing commitment to showcasing Indian heritage globally.
Over the years, she has consistently championed Indian designers on the Met Gala stage. From Rahul Mishra’s floral creation in 2024 to Anamika Khanna’s androgynous ensemble in 2025, her fashion choices have steadily built a narrative of cultural representation.
This year’s Gaurav Gupta X Swadesh saree marked another powerful chapter in that journey. More than just a red carpet appearance, it stood as a curated expression of India’s artistic legacy—bringing together jewellery, textiles, sculpture, and storytelling on one of fashion’s most influential global stages.
