The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, who passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 74 after a prolonged battle with blood cancer. Best remembered for his powerful performances in films like Ghajini, Lagaan, Sarfarosh, and the iconic television series Mahabharat, Rawat leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable characters that will continue to inspire generations of actors and cinema lovers.
According to his family and close associates, Pradeep Rawat’s final rites will be held on Wednesday, August 5. His Lagaan co-star Yashpal Sharma confirmed the details through social media, informing fans and members of the film fraternity about the actor’s final journey.
Rawat is survived by his wife, Kalyani Rawat, and their son, Vikramaditya, who have been receiving condolences from friends, colleagues and admirers across the country.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the actor’s manager, Siddharth Tiwari, who revealed that Rawat had been battling blood cancer for nearly five years. Although he had successfully recovered once, the disease returned around six weeks ago. His health deteriorated rapidly after his platelet count dropped significantly, and despite receiving medical treatment for nearly a month, he could not recover.
Soon after the news of his passing, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry. Actor Yashpal Sharma, who shared screen space with Rawat in Lagaan, remembered him with an emotional message, recalling the unforgettable characters he brought to life.

The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) also paid tribute, describing him as one of Indian cinema’s most memorable character actors. The association praised his remarkable screen presence and acknowledged his immense contribution to films across multiple languages.
Born on January 21, 1952, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Pradeep Rawat enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades. He worked not only in Hindi cinema but also in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and several other regional film industries, earning respect for his versatility and commanding performances.
Many television viewers first came to know him through B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat, where he portrayed Ashwatthama, a role that remains one of the most memorable characters from the legendary series.
His Bollywood career featured several standout performances. He impressed audiences as Sultan in Sarfarosh, portrayed the fierce fast bowler Deva Singh Sodhi in the Oscar-nominated Lagaan, and became widely recognised as the ruthless villain in Ghajini, first in the Tamil version and later in the Hindi remake starring Aamir Khan.
