Indian Embassy Advises Visa for Vietnam Even for Visa-Free Phu Quoc Travel
Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam has become a top holiday destination for Indian travellers, thanks to its 30-day visa-free policy, pristine white-sand beaches, luxury resorts, and relaxed atmosphere. However, the Embassy of India in Hanoi has issued a cautionary advisory urging Indian nationals to consider applying for a Vietnam visa even if their travel plans are limited to Phu Quoc.
The visa-free entry policy applies strictly to Phu Quoc Island and does not allow travel to mainland Vietnam. Tourists entering under this arrangement are expected to remain on the island for the duration of their stay. Any movement to cities such as Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi is not permitted under the visa-free policy.
Despite these limits, the Embassy has highlighted situations where tourists may be forced to travel to the mainland due to unforeseen circumstances. These include medical emergencies, flight disruptions, or the need for onward travel or other assistance. Travellers without a valid visa for mainland entry may face significant challenges, including delays in accessing medical facilities, restrictions on domestic travel, and immigration complications.

The advisory also addresses the potential issue of lost passports. In such cases, Indian nationals must file a police report in the jurisdiction where the passport was lost and submit it to the Embassy of India in Hanoi or the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City. The Embassy may then issue an Emergency Certificate or Travel Document, but Vietnamese authorities typically require three to five working days, and sometimes longer, to process an exit permit. During this period, travellers must remain in the country.
To ensure a safe and hassle-free trip, the Indian Embassy advises citizens to obtain an appropriate Vietnam visa before travelling, even if the itinerary is limited to Phu Quoc. Staying informed and planning ahead can help tourists avoid unexpected disruptions and enjoy their visit without complications.
