Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot from Mumbai, is being hailed as a hero after his quick thinking helped prevent a possible disaster aboard a flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Machchhar was the captain of Flight FZ1073 when a violent confrontation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit. According to reports from Israeli officials, the co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed Machchhar during the flight in what authorities are investigating as a possible attempt to take control of the aircraft.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to fight back and, crucially, open the cockpit door. This allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and help overpower the attacker. The aircraft, which had plunged sharply during the struggle, was eventually brought under control and made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Captain Smit Machchhar’s quick thinking

The most crucial moment came when Machchhar, despite being badly injured, managed to release the cockpit door. His action allowed people outside the cockpit to get inside and intervene.

Passengers who entered the cockpit described a terrifying scene. One passenger, Yaniv Hayoun, who was identified as a plumber, helped wrestle with the attacker and later grabbed the aircraft controls before other crew members took over.

Dr Shota Musaev, a dentist travelling on the flight, was also among those who rushed into the cockpit. He recalled finding Machchhar seriously injured and covered in blood. Musaev said he helped restrain the attacker using headphone cords and plastic zip ties.

An off-duty pilot was also reportedly among those who helped regain control of the aircraft. Passengers said the relief pilots entered the cockpit and helped stabilise the plane before the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Reports differ on the nationalities of the off-duty pilots, but their aviation experience proved important during the crisis.

Plane plunged thousands of feet

The incident became even more dangerous when the aircraft reportedly went into a rapid descent. The plane plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the cockpit struggle, according to reports.

Aviation experts later expressed surprise that the Boeing 737 Max 8 survived the extreme descent and was still able to make a safe emergency landing. One expert described the forces involved as severe, while another said the remaining altitude gave those inside the aircraft enough time to recover control.

After landing in Tabuk, all passengers were reported safe. The injured Machchhar was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery. Indian officials said he was in stable condition and that they were in contact with his family.

PM Modi and Netanyahu praise Machchhar

Machchhar’s actions have received international attention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian pilot, describing his actions as courageous and saying his bravery helped avert a major tragedy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also publicly praised Machchhar for fighting back, opening the cockpit door and enabling passengers and crew to overpower the attacker.

US President Donald Trump has also been reported among those praising Machchhar’s actions. However, investigators have stressed that the motive behind the cockpit attack remains under investigation, and officials have cautioned against jumping to conclusions about why it happened.

From Mumbai to the cockpit

Machchhar’s journey to aviation was not something he had planned from childhood. According to a Reuters profile, he initially trained with the idea of joining his family’s textile business.

His interest in aviation changed when he attended an aviation seminar at the age of 19. That experience sparked his interest in flying and eventually set him on a completely different career path.

He later trained in New Zealand for around 18 months in 2008 and 2009. He went on to build extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft and worked with SpiceJet before joining flydubai in 2022. Reports say he has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience.

Machchhar had previously spoken about the responsibility pilots carry for passenger safety. His training and experience became critical when an extraordinary emergency unfolded in the cockpit.

Passengers became part of the rescue

Machchhar was not alone in helping prevent the disaster. The incident also highlighted the actions of ordinary passengers and off-duty aviation professionals who stepped forward when the aircraft was in serious danger.

The plumber who helped inside the cockpit, the dentist who assisted the injured captain and restrained the attacker, and the off-duty pilots who helped stabilise the aircraft all played roles in bringing the situation under control.

For the passengers on board, what began as a routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv suddenly turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency. Their eventual safe landing in Saudi Arabia was the result of a combination of the captain’s quick thinking, passenger intervention, crew response and aviation training.

Captain Smit Machchhar is now recovering in Saudi Arabia, while the investigation into the cockpit attack continues. For his family, colleagues and passengers, his decision to act despite his own serious injuries has become the defining moment of a remarkable story of courage in the air.
