CSK Eyes Revival: MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis Poised for Comeback After Three IPL 2026 Losses
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are gearing up for a potential turnaround in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign, with star players MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis nearing full fitness ahead of their crucial clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday.
The five-time champions have struggled out of the gate, losing all three of their opening matches. Their season started with an eight-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals, followed by a five-wicket loss to Punjab Kings (PBKS), and most recently, a 43-run defeat to arch-rivals Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). These consecutive losses have left CSK languishing near the bottom of the points table, raising concerns among fans and experts alike.
MS Dhoni: The Captain Returns?
Dhoni, who has led CSK to all five of their IPL titles, has been sidelined since sustaining a calf injury during the pre-season camp. The 44-year-old has been absent from away games and was notably missing from CSK’s home fixture against PBKS last Friday.
Despite not featuring in the matches, Dhoni has been actively participating in training sessions, gradually regaining his fitness. He recently batted at the MAC B ground and practiced on the main stadium pitches without showing any visible discomfort. Reports indicate that Dhoni is expected to undergo a fitness test in the coming days, and if he passes, he could make his first appearance of the season at Chepauk—a development that could provide a significant morale boost to the struggling team.
Dewald Brevis: South Africa’s Middle-Order Asset
CSK have also received encouraging news regarding Dewald Brevis, the explosive South African middle-order batter. Brevis has missed all three matches due to a side strain sustained during the pre-season camp. Though he traveled with the team to Guwahati and Bengaluru, he was not selected in the playing XI as he was yet to reach full match fitness.
Head coach Stephen Fleming expressed optimism about Brevis’ return, stating, “We hope he is right for the next game. We have five days before that match, and we’ve taken a conservative approach. Hopefully these days go as planned and he is ready to go. He’s been a big loss, and we are looking forward to having him back.”
Brevis’ presence could significantly strengthen CSK’s middle order, which has struggled to deliver in his absence.
Looking Ahead
With both Dhoni and Brevis approaching match readiness, CSK could regain a critical edge in their upcoming encounter against DC. The combination of Dhoni’s leadership and experience, along with Brevis’ explosive batting, could provide the impetus the team needs to reverse their fortunes and climb the points table.
For CSK, the challenge is clear: integrate their returning stars, stabilize their batting, and build momentum before the season slips further away. Fans are hopeful that this duo’s return could mark the beginning of a comeback story for the defending champions.
