Veteran Tamil actor, director, and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai at the age of 73 following a cardiac arrest, leaving the Indian film industry in deep shock. Known as one of the most influential storytellers in Tamil cinema, his death has triggered an outpouring of grief from political leaders, film personalities, and fans alike.

Leaders and Film Fraternity Pay Last Respects

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay visited K Bhagyaraj’s residence in Chennai to offer his condolences to the grieving family. During his visit, the Chief Minister was seen comforting Bhagyaraj’s son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, who broke down in tears. He also met Bhagyaraj’s wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, and extended his support to the family during the difficult time.

In an emotional post on X, the Chief Minister described Bhagyaraj’s passing as an “irreplaceable loss” to Tamil cinema. He praised the late filmmaker for his immense contribution to storytelling, writing, and performance, noting that his films reflected strong social values, humour, and family emotions. He also announced that Bhagyaraj would be accorded state honours during his final rites.

Chiranjeevi’s Emotional Note

Superstar Chiranjeevi also expressed his shock and grief over the sudden demise. Recalling his recent meeting with Bhagyaraj at Khushbu Sundar’s daughter’s wedding in Goa, he said they had shared laughter, conversations, and photographs just days before the tragic news.

Calling him a “brilliant filmmaker and wonderful human being,” Chiranjeevi extended heartfelt condolences to Bhagyaraj’s family and said his contribution to Indian cinema would always be remembered.

Actor R Madhavan also took to social media to mourn the loss. He described Bhagyaraj as one of the finest screenplay writers and a kind-hearted human being, adding that his presence would be deeply missed across the industry.

A Legacy That Shaped Tamil Cinema

Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj, widely known as the “King of Screenplay,” redefined Tamil cinema with his unique storytelling style that focused on middle-class life, humour, and emotional depth. His films often combined social themes with relatable characters, making them widely popular among audiences.

He made his directorial debut with Suvarillatha Chithirangal (1979) and went on to deliver several memorable films including Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Chinna Veedu, and Enga Chinna Rasa. The latter was so successful that it inspired remakes in multiple languages, including the Hindi hit Beta.

Over his career, Bhagyaraj directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 movies, leaving behind a rich cinematic legacy.

Sudden Passing at Chennai Hospital

The veteran filmmaker was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai after suffering a cardiopulmonary arrest. Despite medical efforts, he could not be revived. He is survived by his wife, former actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, daughter Saranya, and son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, K Bhagyaraj is remembered not just as a filmmaker, but as a storyteller who deeply shaped the emotional language of Tamil cinema.
