Asha Bhosle on Modern Relationships: “This Generation Gets Bored Quickly”

Veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle once shared her candid views on changing relationship dynamics and rising divorce rates among young couples, expressing concern over how quickly modern relationships appear to break down.

Speaking during a conversation with spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the legendary singer reflected on both her personal experiences and her observations of contemporary relationships.

“Divorce Never Crossed My Mind”

Recalling her marriage with renowned music composer R.D. Burman, Asha Bhosle spoke about how disagreements were handled differently in her time.

“When I had issues with him, the most I did was go to my mother’s house for a few days. But the thought of divorce never crossed my mind. I never divorced my husband,” she said, highlighting how separation was not seen as an immediate solution during earlier times.

She also questioned the changing mindset among younger couples, asking, “Nowadays, I hear about couples sending divorce papers every month. Why is this happening, Gurudev?”

Ravi Shankar’s Response

In response, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar attributed the difference to emotional strength, faith, and patience in earlier generations, suggesting that people then were more resilient in handling personal challenges.

Concern Over Changing Values

Asha Bhosle further reflected on her long career in the film industry and how she had witnessed changing relationship patterns over decades.

“I have spent most of my years in the film industry and seen many people, but earlier they never used to take such drastic steps like the current generation does. I feel that the love between them ends very soon, and they get bored with each other quickly too,” she said.

A Life Marked by Love and Loss

Born into a musical family, Asha Bhosle had three children — Hemant, Varsha, and Anand — from her first marriage to Ganpatrao Bhosle. Her early married life was difficult, and she eventually separated in 1960 after facing domestic challenges.

Later, she found companionship with music composer R.D. Burman, forming one of Indian cinema’s most iconic singer-composer partnerships. The two shared a deep personal and professional bond until his death in 1994.

Her eldest son Hemant worked as a music composer, while her daughter Varsha pursued writing as a columnist. Her youngest son Anand managed her professional career.

Personal Tragedies

Asha Bhosle also endured significant personal losses. Her daughter Varsha died in 2012, while her son Hemant passed away in 2015 after battling cancer.

Despite these hardships, she continued to remain active in music for decades, building one of the most remarkable legacies in Indian entertainment history.

She is now survived by her grandchildren, including Chaitanya Bhosle and Zanai Bhosle, who continue to be part of her family’s musical and public legacy.
