Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Ajinkya Rahane has endured a difficult start to IPL 2026, with his team still searching for their first win after five matches and his leadership coming under added scrutiny following a disciplinary reprimand from the league.

Rahane was fined ₹12 lakh after KKR were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their clash against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai. The penalty was imposed by the IPL Governing Council under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct, marking the franchise’s first such offence of the season.

In an official statement, the league confirmed: “Kolkata Knight Riders Captain Ajinkya Rahane has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 22 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.”

As per the regulations, since this was KKR’s first over-rate violation of the season, Rahane was individually fined ₹12 lakh.

The development comes at a time when KKR are already struggling for form, having failed to register a single win in IPL 2026 so far. Their latest defeat came against Chennai Super Kings, who secured a comfortable 32-run victory to move up the points table.

Defending a total of 192/5, CSK were powered by standout bowling performances, particularly from spinner Noor Ahmad, who returned to form with figures of 3/21, and pacer Anshul Kamboj, who picked up two crucial wickets. Together, they ensured KKR were restricted to 160/7 in 20 overs.

KKR’s chase began on a shaky note after a change in their opening combination saw Sunil Narine partner Finn Allen at the top instead of Rahane. Although Narine showed early aggression, KKR lost momentum quickly after Allen fell early, followed by Narine’s dismissal during the powerplay.

At 36/2, KKR were already under pressure, marking their lowest powerplay score since 2024. Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi attempted to rebuild the innings with a steady partnership, but regular breakthroughs from CSK prevented any sustained recovery.

Middle-order contributions from Ramandeep Singh (35) and Rovman Powell (31 not out) offered some resistance, but the target of 193 always looked out of reach as wickets continued to fall at crucial moments.

With five straight defeats, a fine for slow over-rate, and growing concerns over team balance, Rahane’s leadership is now facing its toughest examination yet as KKR search desperately for a turnaround in IPL 2026.
