Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batter Virat Kohli once again made headlines with a record-breaking performance during their Indian Premier League clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Wednesday, further strengthening his legacy in the tournament.
Kohli played a composed knock of 49 off 34 balls, guiding RCB to a comfortable five-wicket victory. Although he narrowly missed out on a half-century, the innings carried historical significance as he surpassed KL Rahul to become the Indian opener with the most sixes in IPL history. Kohli now has 185 sixes as an opener, edging ahead of Rahul’s 184.
In the overall list of IPL six-hitters, Kohli currently stands third, behind West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who leads with 326 sixes, and Australian batter David Warner, who has 210. India’s Rohit Sharma follows in fourth place among Indian players with 148 sixes, while Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill are also part of the elite list.
Despite not being at full fitness, Kohli’s innings reflected his trademark discipline and control. He revealed after the match that he had been dealing with a sore knee and mild illness for several days but was still satisfied with his intensity and approach at the crease.
“I’m still not 100%. My knee was a bit sore last game. Even health-wise, I’ve been under the weather for four or five days now,” Kohli said, acknowledging the physical challenges he has been managing.
He added that while he was happy with his start and intent, he would have preferred to finish the game himself. Kohli also noted that the pitch conditions slowed down significantly, making stroke play more difficult as the innings progressed.
The former India captain’s form in the tournament has been exceptional, as he currently holds the Orange Cap with 228 runs at an impressive average of 57, underlining his consistency at the top of the order for RCB.
With this latest milestone, Kohli continues to extend his already legendary IPL career, combining consistency, adaptability, and record-breaking performances that keep him at the forefront of the league.
