R Ashwin Urges Mumbai Indians to Make Suryakumar Yadav Captain, Reflects on Hardik Pandya’s Challenges
Former India all-rounder and legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his opinion on the Mumbai Indians (MI) captaincy ahead of the IPL 2026 season, suggesting that Suryakumar Yadav should be the franchise’s permanent captain over Hardik Pandya.
Ashwin Backs Suryakumar Yadav for MI Leadership
Speaking on his Hindi YouTube channel ‘Ash ki Baat’, Ashwin said, “Suryakumar Yadav being the captain of the Mumbai Indians is a no-brainer. Usko captaincy dena hi chahiye (He should definitely be the captain). And the fact that it isn’t happening, I’m sure, is a bit of a concern.”
Ashwin highlighted Suryakumar’s recent achievements, noting that he is currently India’s T20I captain and led the team to victory at the T20 World Cup 2026, underlining his proven leadership on the international stage.
Acknowledging Hardik Pandya’s Credentials
While advocating for Suryakumar’s captaincy, Ashwin also reflected on the unique challenges faced by Hardik Pandya during his tenure as MI captain.
“We should also look at Hardik’s captaincy credentials. Hardik Pandya, as the Gujarat Titans captain, won a title in his first season, and the team was the runner-up in the second,” Ashwin said.
He added that Pandya’s first season with MI in 2024 was overshadowed by the transition following Rohit Sharma’s five-title legacy, creating immense pressure and scrutiny.
“Now he has to contend with a lot of people telling him that Suryakumar Yadav is the incumbent Indian team captain, yet Hardik is the captain of Mumbai. It’s a very challenging situation; a lot of things could be going through his mind,” Ashwin elaborated.
Support for Pandya Under the Right Conditions
Ashwin believes that Pandya can excel as MI captain if he receives support and isn’t burdened by external pressures.
“Leaving external issues aside, without any pressure and with the support of the players and management, I still think Hardik can do a fine job. He needs to use this squad that he has in the right way,” Ashwin said.
Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 Campaign
Mumbai Indians will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday, March 29. The team management’s decision regarding the captaincy will be closely watched, with fans eager to see whether Suryakumar Yadav or Hardik Pandya leads the side this season.
Ashwin’s comments shed light on the leadership dynamics within MI, balancing the accomplishments of Pandya while pointing out the strategic advantage of installing Suryakumar as captain.
