Royal Challengers Bengaluru Sold for Rs 16,706 Crore: Will the Team Keep Its Name?
The IPL witnessed a landmark deal this week as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise was sold for a staggering USD 1.78 billion (approximately ₹16,706 crore), making it the costliest IPL team in history. A consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group (ABG) acquired 100 percent equity stake in RCB from United Spirits Limited (USL), alongside partners including Blackstone’s perpetual private equity strategy (BXPE), Bolt Ventures owned by American investor David Blitzer, and media giant Times of India.
This acquisition covers both RCB’s men’s IPL team and women’s WPL team, ensuring that the consortium will now hold the rights to operate and manage the franchise in both leagues.
Will RCB Change Its Name?
One of the biggest questions on fans’ minds was whether the iconic team name would be altered under the new ownership. However, Ananya Birla, a prominent figure in the Aditya Birla Group, seems to have confirmed that the name will remain unchanged. She shared a repost on her Instagram story indicating that the team will continue to be called Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
A Historic Sale

United Spirits Limited confirmed the transaction in an official statement:
“United Spirits Limited, pursuant to the meeting of its Board of Directors, today announced that it has entered into definitive agreements for the sale of the 100 percent equity stake held in its wholly owned subsidiary Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL) to a consortium. The consortium comprises Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone’s BXPE, for a total consideration of ₹166.6 billion in an all-cash transaction.”
RCB, one of the eight original IPL franchises since the league’s inception in 2008, finally clinched their maiden IPL title in 2025. With this mega-sale, the franchise has not only become the most expensive IPL team ever but also strengthened its global appeal and strategic backing through ABG and its partners.
Strategic Ownership
The statement added:
“RCSPL owns and operates the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchises that participate in the IPL and Women’s Premier League (WPL). Upon completion of this transaction, the consortium will, through its ownership of RCSPL, acquire the rights to own and operate the IPL and WPL franchise.”
This deal marks the conclusion of a strategic review of RCSPL initiated by USL in November 2025, paving the way for a new era for the franchise under experienced and diversified ownership.
Fans’ Excitement
With Ananya Birla hinting that the iconic team name will stay, fans can expect continuity in the brand identity, even as the franchise gains massive financial and operational muscle. RCB enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting phase ahead, both on and off the field.
