Riyan Parag’s Master Plan: How Rajasthan Royals Outwitted Sanju Samson in IPL 2026
In a captivating contest between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings on Monday, the spotlight was on the tactical brilliance of RR skipper Riyan Parag, who made his full-time captaincy debut against his predecessor, Sanju Samson. In a display of strategy and insight, Parag masterminded Samson’s dismissal for just 6 runs off 7 balls, leaving fans and analysts impressed with his cricketing acumen.
Having played alongside Samson for years and often bowling to him in the nets, Parag knew exactly how to unsettle the former captain before he could find his rhythm. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Parag explained the thinking behind the move.
“I feel for Sanju bhai, it was the first three balls or first four balls that we wanted to execute something. That kind of went well, so we went ahead with it. We were just trying to target where he plays his first three balls or first four to five balls and then set fielders accordingly, and ask him to hit a better shot or a different shot, which is, again, a gamble sort of, but then that gives us a lot of percentage of favours in our way,” Parag revealed.
The plan worked perfectly. While Samson did manage to strike a boundary early, the RR skipper had already set the stage for a premeditated dismissal. Parag elaborated on the execution:
“Let’s say the shot he got out to, we would have wanted him to hit that shot instead of him pulling a short ball, which he likes. So we just try and make decisions a little uncomfortable for the batsmen, and then we execute. If it comes off, it looks very good. If it doesn’t come off and he gets a few cuts, I’ll be sitting here like a dumb duck, right? So that’s about it,” he said.
The tactic highlighted not only Parag’s leadership skills but also his deep understanding of individual player strengths and weaknesses. By pre-empting Samson’s likely moves and setting a trap, RR managed to strike early against CSK’s top order, giving them a significant advantage in the match.
Parag’s debut as full-time captain, coupled with his tactical ingenuity, has already made headlines, signaling a new era of leadership for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. His ability to combine strategy with execution could be a defining factor for the team as they aim for a strong season in one of cricket’s most competitive leagues.
