Mohammed Shami Opens Up on International Snub, Domestic Success, and Thoughts on Retirement
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has recently spoken candidly about his international career, domestic performances, and retirement plans, sending a blunt message to the BCCI. Despite taking an impressive 67 wickets for Bengal in the 2025-26 domestic season, Shami has been overlooked for selection in recent Indian squads, sparking speculation about his future.
Shami, 35, was a key member of India’s squad during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where the team finished as runners-up to Australia, and later contributed to India’s Champions Trophy triumph in 2025. However, injuries and periods of inconsistent fitness have affected his international appearances, and even after regaining full fitness, he was not selected for series against South Africa, New Zealand, or the T20 World Cup.
Despite these setbacks, Shami remains resolute. Speaking on The Shubhankar Mishra Show, he addressed retirement speculation head-on, making it clear that he will continue playing as long as he enjoys the game.
“When I get tired, I will call it a day. But I am not even thinking about retirement right now because such thoughts pull you down. If this thought crosses your mind, it means you’re already tired. And if you’re tired, it means you’re bored. I’ve said this earlier too, I will leave cricket the day I wake up and feel bored,” Shami said.
He added, “So yes, the day I feel lazy or bored, I will quit. But I am neither bored nor lazy. I am enjoying the game. The results are good and positive.”
Shami’s IPL journey has also seen ups and downs. After being picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2025 mega auction, he endured a challenging season and was released ahead of IPL 2026. He has now been traded to Lucknow Super Giants, where he is eager to make an impact.
“As a bowler, I will give my 100 per cent. I’ll perform my responsibilities and try to meet the expectations set for me. Rest, I can’t change my luck. All I can contribute is with my attitude and determination. If Lucknow has trusted me, I will give my all. Still, whenever you’re playing, the main element is satisfaction,” Shami said.
He emphasized that his focus remains on his rhythm and preparation rather than on selections or statistics. “I did not focus on how much domestic cricket I’ve played, but on the fact that my rhythm is alright. If that’s in place, I start thinking about the future,” he explained.
Shami’s words reflect a veteran cricketer determined to continue performing at the highest level, even in the face of national selection snubs. With IPL 2026 ahead, fans will be watching closely to see the seasoned pacer showcase his skill, attitude, and leadership once again.
