Yuvraj Singh Recalls 2007 Captaincy Shift, Reacts to SRH Naming Ishan Kishan as Stand-In Captain
New Delhi: Former Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh shared his thoughts on the recent leadership decision by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), which appointed Ishan Kishan as captain during Pat Cummins’ absence in IPL 2026, bypassing Abhishek Sharma, a long-serving franchise player. While Yuvraj expressed admiration for Ishan, he empathized with Abhishek, citing the challenges players face when years of loyalty and effort are overlooked.
SRH’s Leadership Decision Sparks Debate
With Cummins unavailable for the initial matches of the season, SRH decided to give Ishan Kishan the leadership role. Many cricket pundits and fans expected Abhishek Sharma, who has been with the Sunrisers for seven years and delivered consistent performances, to be entrusted with the role.
Yuvraj, who has trained extensively with Abhishek, admitted he was disappointed with the choice, saying, “Abhishek came into the team before the World Cup, played in it, scored runs, helped India win, and then he didn’t get the captaincy in the IPL. For a player who has given his heart and soul to a team for many years, being overlooked is naturally disappointing.”
Despite his disappointment, Yuvraj noted that the friendship and professional respect between Abhishek and Ishan would help maintain team harmony.
Drawing Parallels with 2007: Dhoni’s Sudden Rise
Yuvraj reflected on his own experience with unexpected leadership shifts in Indian cricket. He recalled the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, when MS Dhoni, then relatively inexperienced, was suddenly appointed India’s captain over senior players including himself, Harbhajan Singh, and Virender Sehwag.
He said, “It was like someone was destined to lead and achieve great things for India. But from a player’s perspective, it can be disheartening when someone who has contributed so much over years doesn’t get the role they might have expected.”
Yuvraj’s anecdote underscores how franchises and teams often make leadership decisions based on long-term strategy, perceived potential, or charisma, rather than seniority alone.
Leadership, Loyalty, and Player Psychology
The former all-rounder emphasized the psychological impact of leadership decisions on players. “In franchise cricket, giving the captaincy to a player allows them to grow, learn, and take responsibility. But when someone is overlooked despite years of dedication, it can affect their mindset. The key is to turn that disappointment into motivation and continue performing for the team,” he said.
Yuvraj also highlighted that the IPL provides a unique stage for young leaders to develop, pointing out that while Abhishek might have been a more obvious choice, the focus must now shift to supporting Ishan Kishan to ensure team cohesion.
Looking Ahead
SRH’s decision has sparked discussions about leadership, experience, and loyalty in modern cricket, with fans weighing in heavily on social media. Yuvraj concluded with a balanced perspective: “Now that the decision is made, the focus should be on supporting the captain, giving your best on the field, and letting performances speak. Cricket is ultimately about contribution, effort, and growth.”
This incident not only reflects the challenges franchises face when selecting leaders but also provides insight into player dynamics, morale, and the importance of mentorship within teams.
