Dinesh Karthik Opens Up on His Mentorship Role at RCB: “Coaching is About Understanding the Player, Not Overcoaching”
Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has quietly become one of the most influential figures behind the scenes at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in recent years. Transitioning from his playing days with the franchise into a mentorship and batting coaching role, Karthik has played a key part in shaping the team’s approach, particularly in pressure situations.
Speaking to the media, Karthik explained the philosophy that guides his work with the team. “In our team, we have players at very different stages of their careers. All of them are eager to learn, and my role is to understand what each individual needs while ultimately preparing them for match situations. Where they bat and the challenges they face are very different,” he said.
He cited examples from RCB’s current squad, including Phil Salt, who often faces the new ball swinging, and Romario Shepherd, for whom swing is rarely a concern. “It’s about helping them understand those scenarios, what positions to get into, what to look for, and then observing and giving feedback accordingly. Coaching is as much about understanding the person as it is about the skill,” Karthik added.
The impact of this personalized approach was evident in RCB’s historic start to the 2026 IPL season, where the team achieved the fastest 200-plus chase in IPL history, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in just 15.4 overs. The achievement highlighted the team’s strong preparation and ability to execute under pressure—a direct reflection of Karthik’s mentorship.
Karthik emphasized the importance of clarity, brevity, and trust in his coaching. “These are elite players who are already dominating world cricket, so you don’t need to overcoach. It’s about giving them the right inputs and trusting them to make the best decisions. My experience in broadcasting has been very helpful. You travel, watch different teams and players closely, and analyse both their strengths and weaknesses,” he explained.
He further elaborated on how his commentary experience has enhanced his coaching approach: “As a commentator, you’re constantly observing and breaking the game down. That helps later in coaching. It’s also taught me to communicate clearly and concisely, and that really helps when working with players.”
Karthik has been particularly hands-on in preparing players for specific match scenarios. “Tim David is working on specific scenarios that bowlers might target him with. It starts with understanding his strengths, he’s a tall player with a unique range, and we figure out how to get him into positions where he can execute certain shots consistently,” he said. “We try to simulate match situations in training, identify the shots he’s most comfortable with, and design drills around areas where he can improve.”
Under Karthik’s mentorship, RCB’s batting has shown consistency, adaptability, and a clear understanding of situational cricket. His approach reinforces the idea that effective coaching is less about micromanaging and more about understanding, observing, and guiding players to make confident decisions on the field.
As RCB continues its 2026 campaign, Karthik’s influence remains a crucial factor in the team’s quest for glory, proving that sometimes the most impactful contributions are made away from the limelight.
