Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay delivered a spirited speech in the state assembly on Tuesday, taking a swipe at critics who continue to view him merely as a movie star despite his political success.

Responding to remarks made by the opposition a day earlier, Vijay said that some people believe he walked straight from a film set into the Chief Minister’s office. Dismissing the criticism with a touch of humour, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder said that such claims exist only in “reels” and not in reality.

“Some people say I came directly from a film shooting set to become chief minister. In their own language, I would say that is just a reel,” Vijay said in the assembly, drawing attention with his sharp response.

The actor-politician also thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for placing their trust in him and urged lawmakers to work together for the welfare of the state.

‘We Were With The People Long Before Politics’

Vijay stressed that his journey in public service began much before the launch of his political party. Recalling the activities of his fan club, he said that its members had been involved in social welfare initiatives and protests for public causes since 2008.

According to Vijay, the groundwork for his political journey was laid years before Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam was officially formed. He emphasized that serving people was never a sudden decision linked to elections but something he and his supporters had been doing for years.

Viral Assembly Moment

One of the highlights of his speech came when Vijay sought permission from Speaker JCD Pabhakar to recreate a gesture once made by former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The moment quickly went viral on social media, with supporters praising his confidence and style.

Fans flooded X (formerly Twitter) with reactions. One user humorously quoted the famous KGF dialogue, writing, “If you’re bad, I’m your dad.” Another called Vijay’s speech “fire,” saying the actor had transformed into a “firebrand” politician. Some supporters even remarked that the new chief minister was “ragging the seniors,” referring to the opposition DMK members who walked out during his address.

From Kollywood Superstar To Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

Vijay began his acting career in 1992 with Naalaiya Theerpu, directed by his father S.A. Chandrasekhar and produced by his mother Shoba Chandrasekhar. Over the next three decades, he became one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, delivering numerous hits and building a massive fan following.

His recent films include Varisu and Leo in 2023 and The Greatest of All Time in 2024. His final film, Jana Nayagan, has faced multiple delays due to issues related to CBFC certification. The movie was referred to the revising committee after objections from a member of the examining panel, and an HD print of the film was also leaked online earlier this year, leading to several arrests.

Today, Vijay’s focus has shifted from cinema to governance, but his latest assembly speech shows that the star power and punch dialogues that made him a fan favourite are still very much intact.
