Actor Richa Chadha has sparked a conversation about public behaviour and civic responsibility after reacting to a viral report involving an alleged shoplifting incident by an Indian tourist in Japan. The actress used the opportunity to highlight what she believes are some of the habits that give Indian travellers a bad reputation overseas.
The controversy began after investment advisor Muthukrishnan Dhandapani shared an account on social media about a woman from his tour group who was allegedly caught shoplifting from a souvenir shop in Japan. According to his post, the woman reportedly attempted to pay for the items after being caught, but the shop owner took serious offense to the act.
Dhandapani claimed that the Japanese shopkeeper explained how theft is extremely rare in Japan and that the country’s society is built on trust and discipline. He further stated that local police were called and that the woman was eventually let off with a warning after authorities considered her nationality and the respect they held for India.

Reacting to the incident, Richa Chadha expressed frustration over what she described as irresponsible behaviour by some Indians while travelling abroad. Taking to social media, the actress urged people to be more mindful of how their actions reflect on the country as a whole.
She criticized habits such as littering, cutting queues, pushing people, shouting loudly in public places, and creating disturbances while travelling. According to Richa, such behaviour not only causes inconvenience but also affects the image of fellow Indians abroad.
Sharing a personal experience from an airport, Richa revealed that she recently witnessed an Indian family cutting ahead in an immigration line. When she confronted them, she said they ignored her objections and continued moving forward. According to the actress, the family only reacted when another foreign traveller challenged their behaviour moments later.
Richa remarked that when people travel internationally, they become representatives of their country, whether they realize it or not. She stressed that basic courtesy, discipline, and respect for public spaces are essential, especially when visiting countries known for their civic sense and social responsibility.
Her comments quickly gained attention online, with many social media users agreeing that travellers should be conscious of how their actions affect the perception of their country. Others emphasized that a few individuals should not define an entire nation, while acknowledging the importance of following local rules and etiquette.
