The ongoing hunger strike by education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk took a dramatic turn after he was shifted from the protest site at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to Safdarjung Hospital on the 21st day of his fast. The move sparked strong reactions from several members of the film industry, including Vishal Dadlani and Prakash Raj, who questioned the authorities’ decision and expressed concern over the handling of the protest.
Delhi Police, however, clarified that Wangchuk was taken to the hospital following medical advice and in accordance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court, citing concerns over his deteriorating health condition.
Tension at Jantar Mantar
The atmosphere at the protest site became tense after Wangchuk was moved from the location. Members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) alleged that police action against protesters was forceful, while authorities maintained that the step was taken only to ensure Wangchuk received necessary medical care.
The development came shortly after Wangchuk shared that he had lost nearly 20 per cent of his body weight during the fast. Despite his weakening health, he remained firm on continuing his protest until his demands were addressed.
After completing 20 days of fasting, Wangchuk released a video message appealing to citizens to participate in the planned “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20. He described the march as a peaceful movement aimed at raising awareness about student concerns and examination reforms.
Vishal Dadlani Reacts Strongly
Singer and composer Vishal Dadlani expressed his disappointment over Wangchuk being shifted from the protest site. Sharing an emotional message on social media, he questioned the way the situation was handled and voiced his support for the activist.
Dadlani said he was deeply upset by the incident and urged people to pay attention to the issue, expressing concern over the way peaceful protests are being handled.
His reaction reflected the growing support for Wangchuk from sections of the entertainment industry, with several celebrities raising their voices over the issue.

Sonakshi Sinha Continues Support

Actor Sonakshi Sinha, who has previously shown support for Wangchuk’s cause, also shared a video related to the incident. While she did not directly comment on the situation, her post reflected continued support for the activist and the concerns raised by protesters.
Why Is Sonam Wangchuk Protesting?
Sonam Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 at Jantar Mantar, joining the protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
The demonstration has focused on alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including concerns over the NEET-UG paper leak, and demands accountability from authorities. Protesters have also raised concerns about student suicides and the need for major reforms in India’s examination system.
As his fast entered its third week, Wangchuk’s health became a major concern. Reports stated that he had lost significant weight and experienced weakness and muscle loss, though medical monitoring continued.
Despite appeals from doctors and supporters to end his fast, Wangchuk has remained determined to continue his protest. He has instead encouraged people to join the upcoming peaceful march to Parliament.
