More than a decade after Cocktail became one of Bollywood’s most loved romantic dramas, actor Saif Ali Khan has revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes story about the film’s casting. According to Saif, he was not the makers’ first choice to play Gautam, the charming yet confused man caught in a complicated love triangle.
Speaking in a recent interview with Variety India, Saif shared that several actors, including Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan, were approached before him. However, many actors were hesitant to take up the role because Deepika Padukone’s character, Veronica, was written so powerfully that it overshadowed the male lead.
Saif recalled that the makers had already finalised Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty for the film but were struggling to find an actor willing to play Gautam. He explained that Veronica was such a strong, layered and exciting character that many actors may have felt intimidated by sharing the spotlight.
“They had Deepika and Diana, but they couldn’t get a hero to play the part because Veronica’s role was so delicious,” Saif said with a laugh.
The actor further revealed that Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan were among the names considered before he eventually agreed to take on the project. Looking back, Saif jokingly said everyone involved should be thankful he accepted the role because he had a wonderful experience working on the film.
Interestingly, reports over the years have suggested that Ranbir Kapoor was not convinced about Cocktail’s vision at the time and even advised Deepika Padukone against signing the project. However, after the film became a massive success, Ranbir reportedly admitted that his judgment had been wrong.
Released in 2012 and directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail became a turning point in Deepika Padukone’s career. Her portrayal of the free-spirited Veronica earned widespread praise and remains one of the most iconic performances of her career. Alongside her, Diana Penty impressed audiences as the simple and grounded Meera, while Saif’s Gautam brought charm and humour to the story.
The film was praised for its modern take on relationships, memorable music, stylish storytelling and emotionally engaging performances. Even today, Cocktail enjoys a strong fan following and is often considered one of Bollywood’s finest romantic dramas.
Meanwhile, the franchise has returned to theatres with Cocktail 2. Directed by Homi Adajania, the sequel stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles. While the new film follows a fresh storyline, comparisons with the original are inevitable, as fans continue to cherish the magic created by Saif, Deepika and Diana in the first instalment.
Saif’s revelation has once again sparked conversations among fans, many wondering how different Cocktail would have been if Ranbir Kapoor had chosen to play Gautam. Yet, for most audiences, it is difficult to imagine anyone other than Saif Ali Khan bringing the character to life with the same effortless charm.
