Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants following the team’s disappointing performance in IPL 2026. The franchise officially confirmed the development on Friday, stating that Pant had requested to be relieved of captaincy duties and the management accepted his decision with immediate effect.

The announcement came after a disastrous season for Lucknow Super Giants, who finished at the bottom of the points table. The team managed to win only four matches out of 14 and ended the campaign with just eight points, making it one of the worst seasons in the franchise’s IPL history.

Pant, who was bought for a record-breaking ₹27 crore during the IPL 2025 auction, faced immense pressure throughout the season. Expectations were sky-high when Lucknow signed him as captain and one of the biggest faces of the franchise. However, things did not go according to plan over the last two seasons.

As captain, Pant led Lucknow Super Giants in 28 matches across two IPL seasons, winning only 10 games while suffering 18 defeats. His individual performance with the bat also failed to match expectations. During IPL 2026, Pant scored 312 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 138.05. Across two seasons for LSG, he managed 581 runs with a strike rate of 135.74.

In an official statement, the franchise said, “Lucknow Super Giants wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchise has accepted his request with immediate effect.”

LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody described the decision as emotional and difficult but respected Pant’s choice.

“Rishabh approached the franchise with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” Moody said.

The franchise has not yet announced who will replace Pant as captain for the next IPL season. However, the management confirmed that a new skipper will be named soon as the team prepares for a fresh start ahead of IPL 2027.

Lucknow Super Giants entered IPL 2026 hoping to bounce back strongly after finishing seventh in the previous season. But injuries, inconsistent batting performances and repeated bowling failures hurt the team throughout the tournament. Fans were especially disappointed because the squad had several star players and was considered one of the strongest teams on paper before the season began.

Pant’s resignation has now sparked discussions among cricket fans and experts about whether stepping down from captaincy could help him rediscover his best form as a batter. Many believe the pressure of leading the side may have affected his natural attacking game.

Despite the difficult IPL phase, Rishabh Pant remains one of India’s most talented cricketers and an important part of the national team setup. Fans will now hope that the break from captaincy responsibilities helps him focus on his batting and make a strong comeback next season.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants face a major rebuilding challenge as they look to recover from back-to-back disappointing IPL campaigns and return as serious title contenders in the future.
