Punjab Kings (Punjab Kings) registered a commanding 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2026 clash on Sunday, but the match also drew attention for an unusual fielding struggle involving all-rounder Shashank Singh.
Despite the strong win, Punjab Kings’ fielding performance came under scrutiny after Shashank Singh dropped as many as three catches during crucial phases of the match, leaving head coach Ricky Ponting visibly stunned in the dugout.
The first lapse came in the 14th over when Nicholas Pooran mistimed a shot off Yuzvendra Chahal, but Shashank failed to hold onto a relatively straightforward chance, managing only fingertips before the ball slipped away.
Later, in the 18th over, Aiden Markram attempted an aggressive shot that went high toward sweeper cover. Misjudging the trajectory, Shashank again failed to complete the catch, prompting a reaction of disbelief from Ponting, who was seen watching from the dugout.
The third missed opportunity came shortly after, when Mukul Choudhary was dropped in the deep. Running in from deep square leg, Shashank initially got his hands to the ball but could not complete the catch cleanly, allowing another reprieve for Lucknow Super Giants.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer was seen reacting with a light smile to the repeated mistakes, though Ponting appeared more serious during the course of the innings as Punjab Kings struggled in the field.
However, the post-match scenes told a different story. After Punjab Kings completed their dominant win, both Iyer and Ponting were seen interacting warmly with Shashank Singh during the handshake line. The duo embraced him with smiles, appearing to put the fielding errors behind them and backing the player’s morale.
The match itself was a high-scoring affair, with Punjab Kings posting a massive 254/7—the highest total of IPL 2026 so far. Priyansh Arya (93 off 37) and Cooper Connolly (87 off 46) powered the innings with explosive batting.
In response, Lucknow Super Giants put up a fight through Rishabh Pant (43), Aiden Markram (42), and Mitchell Marsh (40), but ultimately fell short by a significant margin as Punjab Kings secured a comfortable win.
While the victory strengthened PBKS’ campaign, Shashank Singh’s fielding performance became one of the most talked-about moments of the match, alongside the team’s spirited response to supporting him after a difficult outing.
