When Rani Mukerji Cried Over Missing Kal Ho Naa Ho: A Fallout with Karan Johar
New Delhi:
On her birthday (March 21), a throwback revelation by Rani Mukerji has resurfaced, recalling a time when she was deeply upset with filmmaker Karan Johar for not casting her in the iconic film Kal Ho Naa Ho.
What Happened
During an episode of Koffee With Karan, which featured Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Karan Johar, the actress candidly opened up about how the situation affected her personally.
Rani revealed that what hurt her the most was not losing the role, but the way she found out about it.
“To be honest, when I first got to know about it, I didn’t get to know it from you… I feel that even if you make a film, you can always discuss it with me, whether you’re taking me or somebody else,” she said, expressing disappointment over the lack of communication.
She further added, “I remember I did go and cry in front of Aamir Khan.”
The Role That Went Elsewhere
The lead role in Kal Ho Naa Ho eventually went to Preity Zinta, whose portrayal of Naina became one of the most memorable performances of her career, making her an overnight star.
About the Film
Released in 2003, Kal Ho Naa Ho featured an ensemble cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Jaya Bachchan, along with Sushma Seth, Reema Lagoo, Lillete Dubey, and Delnaaz Irani in supporting roles.
The film told the emotional story of Naina and Aman Mathur, whose love story takes an unexpected turn due to a life-altering secret, leading Aman to bring Naina closer to her best friend Rohit.
A Lasting Impact
Kal Ho Naa Ho went on to become a massive box office success and remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved romantic dramas. While the film marked a turning point for Preity Zinta, it also became a moment of emotional vulnerability for Rani Mukerji — highlighting how even strong industry friendships can face challenges behind the scenes.
