Jason Holder Catch Controversy Sparks Debate as Ex-Umpire Rules Rajat Patidar “Not Out”

A major controversy erupted during the IPL 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, after a contentious catch by Jason Holder led to the dismissal of RCB captain Rajat Patidar, triggering widespread debate over the third umpire’s decision.

The incident unfolded during a tense phase of the first innings when Patidar, batting on 19, attempted a pull shot off Holder. The West Indies all-rounder dived forward to complete a low catch, with teammate Kagiso Rabada also converging on the ball, creating a moment of confusion and near collision in the outfield.

Despite replays appearing inconclusive, the third umpire ruled in favour of the Gujarat Titans, and Patidar was declared out. The decision immediately sparked frustration within the RCB camp.

Kohli’s on-field reaction adds to drama

RCB star Virat Kohli, who had earlier played a quick cameo of 28 off 13 balls, was visibly animated after the decision. He was later seen engaged in a heated discussion with the fourth umpire near the boundary rope, appearing to seek clarification over the catch.

The decision proved costly for RCB, who lost momentum shortly after Patidar’s dismissal and eventually collapsed to 155 all out in 19.2 overs. Arshad Khan starred with the ball for Gujarat Titans, picking up three crucial wickets.

Former umpire questions the decision

Adding further fuel to the debate, former IPL and international umpire Anil Chaudhary expressed disagreement with the on-field verdict, stating that Patidar should have been given not out based on the available evidence.

“You have to look at two things — control of the catch and body movement. Before Holder had control of his body, his palm went downwards and the ball touched the ground. I think it was not out,” Chaudhary said.

He further added that he was unsure what the TV umpire relied on to uphold the dismissal, highlighting the ambiguity in the replays.

A turning point in a crucial match

Patidar’s wicket came at a critical stage when RCB were looking to build a strong platform. His dismissal triggered a collapse, with RCB losing multiple wickets in quick succession, ultimately derailing their innings.

The incident has since sparked widespread debate among fans and experts, with opinions divided over whether the catch was clean or inconclusive — making it one of the most talked-about moments of IPL 2026 so far.
