MS Dhoni Tipped for CSK Return as Impact Player vs KKR; Mitchell McClenaghan Backs Tactical Comeback
MS Dhoni could be in line for a strategic return for Chennai Super Kings in their upcoming IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, with former New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan backing the idea of using him as an “Impact Player” if he is declared fit.
Dhoni has missed CSK’s first four matches of the season due to a calf injury and may sit out his fifth consecutive game on Tuesday. While he has been training at the Chepauk nets under lights, his involvement has so far been limited to throwdowns from support staff, including batting coach Mike Hussey, as he continues to build up match fitness.
McClenaghan, speaking on Star Sports’ show Amul Cricket Live, suggested that CSK should consider easing Dhoni back into action through the Impact Player rule. He noted that such a move would allow the veteran wicketkeeper-batter to contribute in short, high-impact batting bursts without the physical burden of extensive running or fielding duties.
“If MS Dhoni is fit, then CSK should bring him in as the impact player,” McClenaghan said, adding that Dhoni’s finishing ability could be especially valuable in pressure chases where quick runs are needed.
He further emphasized that Dhoni’s role could be maximized by using him late in innings to provide a powerful finishing touch. According to him, Dhoni’s aggressive stroke play and experience in high-pressure situations could significantly strengthen CSK’s lower middle order.
Meanwhile, CSK ended a three-match losing streak with a morale-boosting win over Delhi Capitals in their previous outing. The victory was powered by a stunning unbeaten century from Sanju Samson and a match-winning bowling spell from Jamie Overton.
With the team gaining momentum and fans eagerly awaiting Dhoni’s return, all eyes will now be on whether CSK deploy their legendary captain as an Impact Player in tonight’s high-voltage clash against KKR at Chepauk.
