Muzaffar Ali recalls Asha Bhosle’s deep connection to Umrao Jaan and their unfinished collaborations

Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali has shared heartfelt memories of his long creative association with legendary singer Asha Bhosle, especially during the making of the classic film Umrao Jaan.

Speaking about a recent interaction, Ali recalled a coffee table book released on Umrao Jaan, which included a printed note where Asha Bhosle expressed gratitude, writing that she felt inspired and honored by the recognition. He said they had last spoken around the time of the book’s release, and that she had shown deep warmth and interest during their conversation.

Ali described visiting her home, where he played songs she had recorded for his later project Zooni. According to him, Asha Bhosle was visibly emotional while listening, even asking whether she had truly sung those tracks. When assured that she had, she reportedly expressed admiration for the compositions, calling them beautiful and moving.

The filmmaker also reflected on their earlier collaboration on the film Daaman, noting that their creative partnership extended beyond Umrao Jaan. He added that there was also an unreleased song recorded for another of his films, which never reached the public.

Ali further revealed that he had once discussed a proposed Farsi-language music album inspired by the works of Amir Khusrau and Rumi with Asha Bhosle. He said she was enthusiastic about the idea, remarking that while she had sung in many languages, she had never explored Persian music, and saw it as a new creative opportunity.

Reflecting on the making of Umrao Jaan, Ali addressed a long-circulating claim by Asha Bhosle that she was initially meant to sing only one song in the film. He clarified that this was not the case, explaining that she was not the first choice at the earliest stage, when Jaidev was considered as composer. However, after Khayyam came on board, it was unanimously decided that Asha Bhosle would sing the entire soundtrack.

He added that the team consciously worked to bring a different tonal quality from her usual style by adjusting her vocal scale. According to him, she embraced the change fully and delivered performances that gave the film its distinctive emotional depth.

Ali emphasized that Asha Bhosle’s contribution went beyond singing. She reportedly immersed herself in the cultural world of Lucknow, studying its etiquette, speech, poetry, and social mannerisms to better understand the character of Umrao. He credited her curiosity and dedication as key elements in shaping the emotional complexity of the film.

The collaboration between Muzaffar Ali, Asha Bhosle, and composer Khayyam produced some of Indian cinema’s most enduring songs, including “Dil Cheez Kya Hai,” “In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke,” and “Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston.”

Ali’s son, filmmaker Shaad Ali, is reportedly expected to attend Asha Bhosle’s funeral in Mumbai, according to the account shared in the interview.
