CSK’s ₹14.2 Crore Tactical Blunder: Prashant Veer Underused as Five-Time Champions Struggle in IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have had a forgettable start to IPL 2026, losing their first three matches and sitting at the bottom of the points table. Once considered one of the most formidable teams in the tournament, CSK now appear vulnerable, with critics pointing to leadership decisions and tactical missteps as key reasons behind the slump.
The absence of veteran MS Dhoni has been felt across all departments, and the inclusion of Sanju Samson has yet to deliver the expected results. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has come under scrutiny, particularly for his handling of the team’s high-profile ₹14.2 crore all-rounder, Prashant Veer.
Veer, a 20-year-old uncapped left-arm spinner from Uttar Pradesh, was acquired as a like-for-like replacement for veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was traded to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Samson. While his inclusion initially appeared to balance CSK’s squad, questions quickly arose as Gaikwad chose not to utilize Veer as a bowler.
After missing CSK’s opening match against Rajasthan Royals, Veer made his playing XI debut against Punjab Kings. Shockingly, he did not bowl a single over, despite PBKS successfully chasing a daunting 210-run target with eight balls to spare.
Sunday’s 43-run defeat to defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru only amplified the concerns. RCB’s top order, led by Tim David and Rajat Patidar, tore into CSK’s bowling attack, posting a mammoth 250/3. Yet once again, Gaikwad refrained from using Veer in a bowling role.
CSK’s Own ‘Cameron Green’ Moment?
Critics have compared CSK’s handling of Veer to Kolkata Knight Riders’ treatment of Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who was signed for ₹25.20 crore but has yet to bowl in the tournament due to a lower-back injury sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026. While KKR’s cautious approach is injury-driven, CSK have no such restrictions for Veer, making his underutilization all the more puzzling.
Despite this tactical concern, it is still early days in IPL 2026. CSK have time to reflect on their mistakes, make adjustments, and bounce back. Analysts suggest that giving Veer the full opportunity to perform as an all-rounder could be key to reversing their fortunes.
With leadership, strategy, and talent management under the microscope, CSK will need to address these issues promptly to re-establish themselves as the dominant force they were in previous seasons. The coming matches will be crucial for both Gaikwad and the high-profile recruits like Veer to justify their price tags and help the five-time champions climb up the table.
