Mumbai is once again bracing for a spell of intense monsoon weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city and several adjoining districts. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, is expected to continue over the next few days, raising concerns over waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruptions to public transport.
The weather department has forecast heavy rain between July 4 and July 6 across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary and avoid travelling through flood-prone areas.
Heavy Rain to Continue Across Mumbai
According to the IMD, Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to receive widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. Some isolated locations could witness extremely heavy showers, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
The weather office has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, which may cause damage to weak structures, uproot trees, and affect power supply in some areas.
Several parts of Mumbai have already reported waterlogging after continuous rain, slowing down traffic and affecting daily commuters. Low-lying roads are expected to remain vulnerable if rainfall intensifies.
Local Train Services Affected
The heavy downpour has also impacted Mumbai’s lifeline—its suburban railway network. Due to water accumulation on tracks and reduced visibility, several local train services are running behind schedule, causing inconvenience to thousands of office-goers and passengers.
Railway officials are closely monitoring the situation and have appealed to commuters to check train updates before beginning their journey.
Disaster Management Issues Advisory
The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department has asked citizens to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during the period of heavy rainfall.
Residents have been advised to stay away from flooded roads, coastal areas, and landslide-prone regions, especially in the ghat sections of Pune, Satara, and Nashik, where moderate to heavy rainfall has also been forecast.
Authorities have also urged people to contact emergency helpline numbers immediately in case of flooding, fallen trees, or any weather-related emergency.
Rainfall Across Maharashtra
Apart from Mumbai, several districts across Maharashtra are expected to experience intense rainfall over the weekend. Heavy showers have been predicted in Raigad, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, while the hilly regions of Satara, Pune, and Nashik are also likely to receive significant rainfall.
Officials say there is a possibility of temporary road closures, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding in these areas if the rain continues at the expected intensity.
Delhi to See Monsoon Activity Pick Up
While western Maharashtra battles heavy rain, Delhi is expected to witness a gradual increase in monsoon activity after a relatively slow start to the season.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the national capital, forecasting generally cloudy skies along with light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds through the weekend.
Meteorologists say the current weather pattern is due to a low-pressure system over central India, which is presently drawing most of the monsoon moisture towards western and central parts of the country.
According to weather experts, once this system weakens over the next couple of days, rainfall activity is likely to increase across Delhi and other parts of north India.
The capital is expected to receive light to moderate rain from Sunday onwards, with thunderstorms and wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph at times.
Citizens Advised to Stay Alert
With heavy rain expected to continue in Mumbai over the next few days, authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged areas, and keep track of official weather updates before travelling.
Emergency teams remain on standby across Maharashtra to respond to any rain-related incidents, while civic agencies are monitoring drainage systems and flood-prone locations to minimise disruption.
