Aamir Khan Reflects on ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ Failure: “I Was Shattered”

At a candid interaction during the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Aamir Khan opened up about the emotional toll of the disappointing box office performance of his 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha. The actor described the experience as deeply painful, admitting that the film’s failure continues to affect him even today.

Drawing a comparison with his earlier setback, Thugs of Hindostan, Aamir explained why the two experiences felt vastly different. He revealed that he was not surprised when Thugs of Hindostan failed, as he himself did not connect with the film. “I wasn’t surprised because I didn’t like it. So, the audience and I were on the same side,” he said.

However, the case was entirely different with Laal Singh Chaddha. Aamir shared that he had immense faith in the project and truly believed in its storytelling and emotional depth. The film, an official adaptation of the Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, was a passion project that he expected audiences to embrace wholeheartedly.

Despite receiving some positive feedback during early screenings, the film ultimately failed to resonate with a significant section of viewers. Aamir acknowledged this divide, saying, “While a number of people have liked Laal Singh Chaddha, I’m also aware that a number of people really didn’t get it.”

On the commercial front, the actor admitted that he had miscalculated the film’s box office potential. Made on a reported budget of around ₹200 crore, he had expected it to comfortably cross ₹300 crore. Reflecting on this, he candidly attributed his misjudgment to overconfidence stemming from his past successes. “I had too many successes back to back, so I became overconfident,” he confessed.

The emotional impact of the film’s failure was profound. Aamir described feeling “shattered,” comparing the experience to grieving the loss of a loved one. “I was very sad, depressed, and in mourning,” he said, adding that it took him considerable time to process and recover from the setback.

Aamir Khan’s honesty offers a rare glimpse into the vulnerability behind stardom—where even one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors is not immune to self-doubt, disappointment, and the unpredictable nature of audience reception.
